Abstract:
Discusses how the 1936 Berlin Olympics were used by Hitler to promote the myth of the "Aryan race" and to boost Germany's prestige, as well as the effects of Nazi policies on the lives of Jewish athletes whose careers were cut short with Hitler's rise to power. Jews were expelled from German sports organizations and barred from competitions. However, due to fear of international reactions and boycotts, Hitler allowed Jews from other countries to participate in the Olympics and even included a half-Jew, the fencer Helene Mayer, in the German team. To Hitler's dismay, 13 Jews won medals in the Olympics. Traces the fate of Jewish sports champions in Germany and occupied Europe. Recounts the stories of the heroic French swimmer Alfred Nakache and boxer Victor "Young" Perez, who were deported to Auschwitz. Perez was killed in 1945 but Nakache survived and successfully resumed his sports career after the war.
