Abstract:
Analyzes the results of sociological research conducted among 377 Jews in West Germany. Two-thirds of the respondents believed that the Germans were antisemitic. However, only a small minority experienced antisemitism themselves. Posits that because the Jews in West Germany constitute a small and indiscernible group in society, West German antisemitism is cognitive and inherited from the cultural tradition. Similarly, there is an inherited fear of antisemitism among the Jews, a sense of distrust toward the surrounding non-Jewish world.
