Abstract:
During the 1930s, despite a restrictive immigration policy, the British government was interested in attracting prominent refugee scholars, especially scientists, though it left the funding and administration of this rescue action to private organizations. Describes the activities of the Academic Assistance Council, afterwards named Society for the Protection of Science and Learning, which was founded for this purpose and enjoyed widespread support in the British academic community. Although most of the refugee scholars whom it assisted were Jews, the organization was careful not to be identified as Jewish; it did not name Jews to leading positions and it emphasized that it aided university teachers of "whatever country who, on grounds of religion, political opinion, or race are unable to carry on their work in their own country."
