    Abstract: "Jüdischer Anarchismus fand in der radikalen Religionskritik des 19. Jahrhunderts einen festen identitären Bezugspunkt. Infolge der Oktoberrevolution und der Repression in der Sowjetunion setzten eine religiöse Renaissance und Neubestimmung jüdischer Radikalität ein. Diese Rückkehr zur jüdischen Tradition verschob die Grenzen der jiddischistischen radikalen Subkultur und wurde je nach Standpunkt als religiöser Nonkonformismus, Bedrohung, Verweichlichung oder als Erweiterung epikureischen Denkens und als Bereicherung erfasst. Diese argumentationsanalytische Untersuchung schält die Prozesse der Gruppenbildung heraus, arbeitet verschiedene Begriffe von jüdischer Religion und Lebensform ( Yidishkayt ) heraus und zeigt, dass nicht Religion, sondern Erkenntnis und Autonomie den Kern der Debatte bildeten."     Abstract: In den tagespolitischen Diskussionen kommen Religionen meist als Ursachen oder Rechtfertigungen für gewalttätige Konflikte vor. Der Friedensforscher Weingardt möchte hier dagegenhalten und das "Friedenspotential" von Religionen deutlich machen. Nach einer Einführung, die die Begriffe und Konfliktmodelle der Friedensforschung kurz erklärt, stellt er 10 Methoden der Friedensarbeit vor, bei denen auch Führer und prominente Sprecher der Weltreligionen eine bedeutende Rolle spielten und spielen. Darunter sind geläufige Aktionsformen wie "Gewaltfreie Aktion", Friedensmarsch", "Dialog" und "Vermittlung" und weniger bekannte wie "Training For Peace" und "Mediation". Die allgemeinen Beschreibungen werden durch zahlreiche positive, auch erfolgreiche Beispiele aus aller Welt konkretisiert. Alle grossen Religionen kommen zum Zuge, auch der derzeit hart kritisierte Islam, dessen Friedensinitiativen, wie z.B. 1994 in Ruanda, kaum publiziert werden. Die Beispiele aus unserem Land sollen zum eigenen Engagement, auch an Schulen, ermutigen. Mit Kontaktadressen, und vielen weiterhelfenden Informationen. (2 S)

    Abstract: Fiona Wright traces the dramatic as well as the mundane paths taken by radical Jewish Israeli leftwing activists, whose critique of the Israeli state has left them uneasily navigating an increasingly polarized public atmosphere. This activism is manifested in direct action solidarity movements, the critical stances of some Israeli human rights and humanitarian NGOs, and less well-known initiatives that promote social justice within Jewish Israel as a means of undermining the overwhelming support for militarism and nationalism that characterizes Israeli domestic politics. In chronicling these attempts at solidarity with those most injured by Israeli policy, Wright reveals dissent to be a fraught negotiation of activists' own citizenship in which they feel simultaneously repulsed and responsible. Based on eighteen months of fieldwork, The Israeli Radical Left provides a nuanced account of various kinds of Jewish Israeli antioccupation and antiracist activism as both spaces of subversion and articulations of complicity. Wright does not level complicity as an accusation, but rather recasts the concept as an analysis of the impurity of ethical and political relations and the often uncomfortable ways in which this makes itself felt during moments of attempted solidarity. She imparts how activists persistently underline their own feelings of complicity and the impossibility of reconciling their principles with the realities of their everyday lives, despite the fact that the activism in which they engage specifically aims to challenge Jewish Israeli citizens' participation in state violence

    Abstract: Heute würde man die Wiener Salons zwischen 1780 und 1938 als Networking im besten Sinne bezeichnen. Diese meist von jüdischen Gastgeberinnen geprägten Konversationsräume waren in zweifacher Hinsicht Orte der Emanzipation und der Ermächtigung: für die Entwicklung einer bürgerlich-kritischen Zivilgesellschaft und nicht zuletzt für Frauen, die von der Öffentlichkeit noch ausgeschlossen waren. Die Ausstellung stellt die Salons von Fanny von Arnstein und Josephine von Wertheimstein bis hin zu den Reformsalons von Berta Zuckerkandl und Eugenie Schwarzwald als kultivierte Orte der Politik und als politische Orte der Kultur vor. Sie macht die Leistungen der Salonièren für die Wiener Kultur-, Wirtschafts- und Politikszene begreiflich. Und sie zeigt schließlich, welche Bedeutung die Wiener Salonkultur für die vertriebenen Wiener Jüdinnen und Juden im Exil erlangte und dass es im Wien der Nachkriegszeit nicht zufällig die aus dem englischen Exil zurückgekehrte Hilde Spiel war, die diese Kultur noch einmal „salonfähig“ machte.

    Abstract: In Deutschland werden mehr als 12 000 Menschen zu den sogenannten Reichsbürgern gerechnet. Für sie ist die Bundesrepublik kein souveränes Staatsgebilde, sondern bestehen die Deutschen Reiche aus der Zeit vor 1945 fort. Gegenwärtig würden fremde Mächte im Hintergrund die Fäden ziehen. Manche von ihnen gründen auch eigene Reiche, wie etwa der König von Deutschland in Wittenberg, stellen eigene Pässe und Führerscheine aus. Viele erkennen die deutschen Behörden nicht an, verweigern Bußgeldzahlungen und Steuern. Lange Zeit hielt der deutsche Staat die Angehörigen dieser Szene für Spinner und tat sie als ungefährlich ab - bis im Oktober 2016 ein Polizist in Franken von einem Reichsbürger erschossen wurde. Der ausgewiesene Rechtsextremismus-Experte Andreas Speit beleuchtet zusammen mit zehn Fachleuten die Ideologie und die Akteure der verschiedenen Reichsbürger-Gruppierungen. Sie analysieren deren Weltbild und beschreiben, wie ihnen angemessen begegnet werden kann.

    Abstract: In den vergangenen Jahren vollzog sich eine deutlich beobachtbare Radikalisierung des Antisemitismus in Europa, die mit den islamistisch motivierten Terroranschlägen von Paris, Toulouse, Brüssel und Kopenhagen auch mörderische Konsequenzen hatte. Als Indikator für eine neue Qualität und Virulenz des Antisemitismus kann jedoch nicht nur der islamistische Antisemitismus gesehen werden, sondern auch die Zunahme von Antisemitismus in politisch und sozial arrivierten Kreisen und Milieus. Zugleich ist die Hemmschwelle für die Äußerung und Akzeptanz antisemitischer Ressentiments gesunken, sofern diese als "Israelkritik" camoufliert sind. Parallel zu diesen Entwicklungen stellte der Antisemitismus sein Mobilisierungspotential für den politischen Protest auf der Straße unter Beweis, etwa im Rahmen der Mahnwachen für den Frieden und während des Gaza-Krieges 2014.     Abstract: Despite some pioneering work by scholars, historians still find it hard to listen to the voices of women in the Holocaust. Learning more about the women who both survived and did not survive the Nazi genocide - through the testimony of the women themselves - not only increases our understanding of this terrible period in history, but makes us rethink our relationship to the gendered nature of knowledge itself. Women in the Holocaust is about the ways in which socially- and culturally-constructed gender roles were placed under extreme pressure; yet also about the fact that gender continued to operate as an important arbiter of experience. Indeed, paradoxically enough, the extreme conditions of the Holocaust - even of the death camps - may have reinforced the importance of gender. Whilst Jewish men and women were both sentenced to death, gender nevertheless operated as a crucial signifier for survival. Pregnant women as well as women accompanied by young children or those deemed incapable of hard labour were sent straight to the gas chambers. The very qualities which made them women were manipulated and exploited by the Nazis as a source of dehumanization. Moreover, women were less likely to survive the camps even if they were not selected for death. Gender in the Holocaust therefore became a matter of life and death.

    Abstract: Mit dieser Veröffentlichung des Israel-Büros der Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung soll eine interessierte deutschsprachige Öffentlichkeit die Gelegenheit bekommen, Innenansichten der Verhältnisse und der Kämpfe in Israel zu erhalten und lokale Akteure kennenzulernen.
    Abstract: In dieser Publikation finden Sie eine Auswahl von Texten von unserer 2016 neu konzipierten Webseite. Darin kommen vor allem die Stimmen von in Israel lebenden Menschen zu Wort. Sie ermöglichen den geneigten deutschsprachigen Leser*innen sozusagen von innen heraus einen Einblick in die Verfasstheit der israelischen Gesellschaft und in innerisraelische Diskurse: in ungerechte Verhältnisse und in erfolgreiche und weniger erfolgreiche Kämpfe um eine bessere Welt. Natürlich sind wir als Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung bewusst parteiisch, doch es ist uns ein Anliegen, unterschiedliche Perspektiven aufzuzeigen. Folglich finden sich hier linksliberale und linksradikale, zionistische, postzionistische und nicht zionistische Standpunkte sowie gewerkschaftsnahe und akademische Stimmen nebeneinander. Die zur Sprache kommenden Positionen entsprechen deshalb nicht unbedingt denen der Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung, dafür können Sie auf diesen Seiten eine wachsende Zahl israelischer Autor*innen kennenlernen, die die Pluralität des progressiven Israels widerspiegeln. Es sind zentrale und etablierte Figuren der israelischen Linken, junge Publizist*innen, angesehene Intellektuelle und Aktivist*innen. In unserem Bemühen um ein möglichst umfassendes Bild bitten wir unsere Autor*innen und Partner*innen, über eine möglichst breite Palette von Themen zu reflektieren. Sie schreiben über Israels gesellschaftliche Verfasstheit, über Wirtschaftsfragen und Gewerkschaftsarbeit, über die ganz großen politischen Fragen und über die lokalen Kämpfe, über Alltagskultur und reflektierende Kunst, über Geschichte und die Art, wie diese diskutiert wird. Sie berichten über diese Themen kompetent und umfassend, ohne auf einen eigenen Standpunkt zu verzichten.

    Abstract: When the state of Israel was established in 1948, not all Palestinians became refugees: some stayed behind and were soon granted citizenship. Those who remained, however, were relegated to second-class status in this new country, controlled by a military regime that restricted their movement and political expression. For two decades, Palestinian citizens of Israel were cut off from friends and relatives on the other side of the Green Line, as well as from the broader Arab world. Yet they were not passive in the face of this profound isolation. Palestinian intellectuals, party organizers, and cultural producers in Israel turned to the written word. Through writers like Mahmoud Darwish and Samih al-Qasim, poetry, journalism, fiction, and nonfiction became sites of resistance and connection alike. With this book, Maha Nassar examines their well-known poetry and uncovers prose works that have, until now, been largely overlooked. The writings of Palestinians in Israel played a key role in fostering a shared national consciousness and would become a central means of alerting Arabs in the region to the conditions and to the defiance of these isolated Palestinians. Brothers Apart is the first book to reveal how Palestinian intellectuals forged transnational connections through written texts and engaged with contemporaneous decolonization movements throughout the Arab world, challenging both Israeli policies and their own cultural isolation. Maha Nassar reexamines these intellectuals as the subjects, not objects, of their own history, and brings to life their perspectives on a fraught political environment. Her readings not only deprovincialize the Palestinians of Israel, but write them back into Palestinian, Arab, and global history.--

    Abstract: "We don't understand the reactionary mind. As a result, argues Mark Lilla in this timely book, the ideas and passions that shape today's political dramas are unintelligible to us. The reactionary is anything but a conservative. He is as radical and modern a figure as the revolutionary, someone shipwrecked inthe rapidly changing present, and suffering from nostalgia for an idealized past and an apocalyptic fear that history is rushing toward catastrophe. And like the revolutionary his political engagements are motived by highly developed ideas. Lilla unveils the structure of reactionary thinking, beginning with three twentieth-century philosophers--Franz Rosenzweig, Eric Voegelin, and Leo Strauss --who attributed the problems of modern society to a break in the history of ideas and promoted a return to earlier modes of thought. He then examines the enduring power of grand historical narratives of betrayal to shape political outlooks ever since the French Revolution. These narratives are employed to serve different, and sometimes expressly opposed, ends. They appear in the writings of Europe's right-wing cultural pessimists and Maoist neocommunists, American theoconservatives fantasizing about the harmony of medieval Catholic society and radical Islamists seeking to restore a vanished Muslim caliphate. Michael Barnett argues that it all begins with the political identity of American Jews. As Jews, they are committed to their people's survival. As Americans, they identify with, and believe their survival depends on, the American principles of liberalism, religious freedom, and pluralism. This identity and search for inclusion form a political theology of prophetic Judaism that emphasizes the historic mission of Jews to help create a world of peace and justice. The political theology of prophetic Judaism accounts for two enduring features of the foreign policy beliefs of American Jews. They exhibit a cosmopolitan sensibility, advocating on behalf of human rights, humanitarianism, and international law and organizations. They also are suspicious of nationalism--including their own.     Abstract: "Drawing on a newly developed theoretical definition of "missed opportunity," Chances for Peace uses extensive sources in English, Hebrew, and Arabic to systematically measure the potentiality levels of opportunity across some ninety years of attempted negotiations in the Arab-Israeli conflict. With enlightening revelations that defy conventional wisdom, this study provides a balanced account of the most significant attempts to forge peace, initiated by the world's superpowers, the Arabs (including the Palestinians), and Israel. From Arab-Zionist negotiations at the end of World War I to the subsequent partition, the aftermath of the 1967 War and the Sadat Initiative, and numerous agreements throughout the 1980s and 1990s, concluding with the Annapolis Conference in 2007 and the Abu Mazen-Olmert talks in 2008, pioneering scholar Elie Podeh uses empirical criteria and diverse secondary sources to assess the protagonists' roles at more than two dozen key junctures. A resource that brings together historiography, political science, and the practice of peace negotiation, Podeh's insightful exploration also showcases opportunities that were not missed. Three agreements in particular (Israeli-Egyptian, 1979; Israeli-Lebanese, 1983; and Israeli-Jordanian, 1994) illuminate important variables for forging new paths to successful negotiation.     Abstract: "This is a unique and bold story about architecture that boldly challenges Israeli's national identity politics and the official narrative that was used to construct Tel Aviv's identity, culture, and rhetoric. The narrative goes something like this: the white city of Tel Aviv was founded in 1909 to the immediate North of the walled port city of Jaffa under an urban plan developed by Sir Patrick Geddes, which reflected the most advanced and modern organic planning principles. The buildings of Tel Aviv were designed by Bauhaus architects who were trained in Europe before immigrating to Israel. They created an outstanding architectural ensemble of the modern movement in a new cultural context. Tel Aviv became Israel's foremost economic and metropolitan nucleus and has always been considered one of the outstanding examples of innovative town-planning ideas of the first part of the 20th century. This book shows how Tel Aviv's tale of a modernist 'white city' that 'emerged from the dunes' and gained international recognition when it was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 2003 hides behind its skyline the story of a city whose history has been buried. Philosophical toolkit in tow, Carlos Fraenkel invites readers on a tour around the world as he meets students at Palestinian and Indonesian universities, lapsed Hasidic Jews in New York, teenagers from poor neighborhoods in Brazil, and the descendants of Iroquois warriors in Canada. They turn to Plato and Aristotle, al-Ghaz?l? and Maimonides, Spinoza and Nietzsche for help to tackle big questions: Does God exist? Is piety worth it? Can violence be justified? What is social justice and how can we get there? Who should rule? And how shall we deal with the legacy of colonialism? Fraenkel shows how useful the tools of philosophy can be--particularly in places fraught with conflict--to clarify such questions and explore answers to them. In the course of the discussions, different viewpoints often clash. That's a good thing, Fraenkel argues, as long as we turn our disagreements on moral, religious, and philosophical issues into what he calls a "culture of debate." Conceived as a joint search for the truth, a culture of debate gives us a chance to examine the beliefs and values we were brought up with and often take for granted. In ihren grossen philosophischen und politischen Abhandlungen (wie etwa "Elemente und Ursprünge totaler Herrschaft", ID-B 37/95) nimmt die Autorin immer wieder Bezug zu grossen Werken der Weltliteratur. Was nur wenigen bekannt ist: Sie hat auch selbst Gedichte geschrieben. Der Piper Verlag hat sich dieser Tatsache angenommen und in der vorliegenden Anthologie erstmals alle 71 Gedichte Hannah Arendts zusammengetragen. Darunter zeugen die lyrischen Impulstexte der Jugendlichen genauso sehr von einem kraftvollen Drang des Verstehens wie die späten Gedichte der gereiften politischen Theoretikerin. Manche Reime wirken ein wenig anachronistisch in ihrer Verwendung ("hernieder/wieder" etc.), aber die inhaltliche Tiefe spiegelt sehr wohl Hannah Arendts umwerfenden Intellekt wieder. Irmela von der Lühe, Professorin für neuere deutsche Literatur, steuert ein ausführliches und informatives Nachwort bei. Mittleren Beständen wärmstens empfohlen

    Abstract: In this volume, Gabriella Elgrably-Berzin offers an analysis of the fourteenth-century Hebrew translation of a major eleventh-century philosophical text: Avicenna's Kitab al-Najat (The Book of Salvation), focusing on the psychology treatise on physics. The translator of this work was Todros Todrosi, the main Hebrew translator of Avicenna's philosophical writings. This study includes a critical edition of Todrosi's translation, based on two manuscripts as compared to the Arabic edition (Cairo, 1938), and an appendix featuring the section on metaphysics. By analyzing Todrosi's language and terminology and making his Hebrew translation available for the first time, Berzin's study will help enable scholars to trace the borrowings from Todrosi's translations in Jewish sources, shedding light on the transmission and impact of Avicenna's philosophy
    Abstract: This study includes a critical edition of Ṭodrosi's Hebrew translation of "On the Soul", the sixth treatise in section two, Physics, of The Salvation (Haẓalat ha-Nefesh). The critical edition is based on a manuscript of The Salvation housed in the British Library, London, and to a lesser extent, on another manuscript housed in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, both compared to the Arabic version of the text, reissued in Cairo in 1938. -- from the preface, p.
