Antisemitism History 1945-
Abstract:
Asserts that antisemitism continued unabated in Austria after 1945, though its crude expression in formal public contexts was taboo. Austrians resented being blamed for participating in the Holocaust; in their eyes, they themselves were victims, and the Jews who reproached them were aggressors. To defend themselves, they resorted to the stereotypes of the Jew as deicide and as dishonorable huckster, and to the conspiracy theory. In the Waldheim presidential campaign of 1986 the taboo was broken. According to the Austrians, the "villain" plotting the downfall of Austria was the World Jewish Congress. Analyzes the subtle and not-so-subtle linguistic devices by which this message was transmitted. Discusses, also, press coverage of the Kreisky-Peter-Wiesenthal affair of 1975, finding that although the situation was different, the language was almost identical.
