Abstract:
Relates the circumstances of the arrival of Ruzhka Korczak, one of the leaders of the Vilna ghetto resistance, in Palestine in December 1944. Her account of the Holocaust was not the first one received in Palestine during the war, but was the most impressive, partly because of her matter-of-fact and non-judgmental tone: she did not accuse the Yishuv leaders or the Judenrats. In the first edition of her memoirs, "Flames in the Ashes" (1946), Korczak omitted the chapter about the antisemitism prevalent amongst the Soviet partisans; her own youth movement, Hashomer Hatzair, held pro-Soviet attitudes during the war. Only in the 1965 edition was this chapter, "The Forest Episode", added to the book.
