Abstract:
Analyzes the process of emancipation of the Jews in European Christian society. While the liberal regime in France granted the Jews full equality, German society expected that the Jews would adopt German culture. Anti-Jewish prejudice, mainly based on religious differences, could not be abolished by legal emancipation, as shown by the numerous riots and pogroms in Germany, such as in Bavaria and the Lower Rhine, during the 19th century. Focuses on religious suspicion and sentiments of cultural superiority that characterized both Jews and Christians.
