Kurzfassung:
Opposes the renaming of Leicester Polytechnic in Leicester, England, as De Montfort University, after Simon de Montfort. Montfort, who is known as a founder of the British parliament and a defender of popular liberties against royal oppression, was a bitter antisemite, responsible for the 1264 massacres and plundering of the Jews of London, Worcester, Canterbury, and elsewhere, and the destruction of the records of their loans. He was also responsible for the expulsion of the Jews from Leicester in 1231 or 1232. Suggests that Montfort acquired his antisemitism from his mother in Toulouse, France, where he was raised. Criticizes the omission of Montfort's persecution of Jews from a 1958 history of Leicestershire. Holds that naming a university after Montfort has the effect of "normalizing" antisemitism - which should never be done.
