Abstract:
Ford emerged in American public life as an antisemite in 1920, after he acquired the newspaper "The Dearborn Independent". His antisemitism stemmed from his populism and his oversimplified scheme of world economic and political affairs, and was reinforced by his vanity and the belief that, as a great tycoon, he was called on to solve all the world's problems. Ford believed in a conspiracy of Jewish "financial lords" who broke the world's harmony. In 1920-24, he printed more than 90 antisemitic articles in his paper; later they were published as the book "The International Jew". These publications were met with indignation on the part of Jews and many non-Jews as well. There were some attempts to bring law suits against him. In 1927, Ford publicly repudiated his antisemitism and issued an apology, sounding insincere. However, his book continued to be disseminated throughout the world and Ford did not try to stop it. Indirectly, Ford promoted the new wave of antisemitism in the world in the 1920s-30s. Despite the "repudiation", he continued to be an antisemite until his death.
