Abstract:
Traces the basic lack of antisemitism in Brazil to its myths of national origin that emphasize the white race (including Jews) and the progress-producing role of the alien. While this racism has favored Jews, it has victimized Afro-Brazilians and Amerindians. There is a small amount of antisemitism (imported from the USA) among Afro-Americans that might possibly boost popular antisemitism. Social inequality and poverty, both rooted in Brazil's history of slavery, may have negative effects on democracy and threaten the position of the Jews in the future.
