Abstract:
In the struggle over Soviet ideology and the Soviet system, antisemitism serves as a focal point for rallying the opposition. N. Andreyeva's letter to the editor of "Sovietskaya Rossiya" in March 1988 called for re-Stalinization, describing the Jewish "spiritual ancestors" of Gorbachev's liberalism and hinting at a Jewish conspiracy in terms similar to those of Pamyat. It was harshly criticized by "Pravda", but without reference to its antisemitism, a step typical of Gorbachev's policy of "a-Semitism". Although his regime has eliminated anti-Zionist racist propaganda and opposes antisemitic stereotypes, he prefers an attitude of detachment from the "Jewish theme", condemning Zionism as well as antisemitism, and opposing any kind of "extremism", including public confrontation with Pamyat. Notes signs of change in this trend.
