Abstract:
Contends that the independent Arab states (Syria, Egypt, Yemen, Iraq) carried out a planned expulsion of the Jews from their countries following the UN decision to partition Palestine. As proof for the existence of such a plan, brings the speech of Egyptian representative in the UN Heikal Pacha on 24 November 1947 warning of dire consequences should the UN decide on partition, and a meeting of top-level Arab diplomats in Beirut in March 1949. Discusses the case of Libya, which got rid of its Jews already in 1945, and the positions of Jordan and Algeria which both have laws preventing Jews from acquiring citizenship. Describes some Palestinians' objections, at the time and afterwards, to this policy as it strengthened Israel's position in regard to Palestinian refugees. The PLO insists that Israel compensate Palestinian refugees, but does not refer to the Jews who were forced to leave the Arab countries. Calls for a fair agreement for all sides in order to settle this matter.
