Abstract: Focuses on the 1997 award of honorary citizenship of the city of Nuremberg to Karl Diehl, the head of a local industry that had flourished under the Nazis, partly by using forced labor, including from a concentration camp. Discusses the postwar German politics involved and how the memory of Nazism in Nuremberg was distorted to cast all the responsibility on top national officials and "outsiders" or else to highlight the role of Germans as war victims. Stresses the continuing failure of residents of the city to face their own responsibility for the sufferings of Jews, among others, and the degree of their collaboration with Nazism.

Abstract: Discusses debates which took place in 1997-99 concerning the award of the status of honorary citizen to industrialist Karl Diehl in Nuremberg. The city council, led by the Christian Social Union, honored Diehl although it knew that he had exploited concentration camp inmates in his factories during World War II. Defending himself, Diehl alleged that he acted under compulsion and not out of conviction. The scandal highlighted the question of how honestly Nuremberg, and maybe Germany as a whole, has confronted its Nazi past. States that there is a need to recognize the crucial complicity of local economic elites in the crimes of the Third Reich.

Keywords: University of Oxford ; Jews History 1945- ; Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) Economic aspects
Abstract: Describes the 1995-96 controversy in Great Britain over Gert-Rudolf Flick's attempt to endow a chair in international thought (in his own name) at Oxford University's Balliol College, evidently to lend lustre to his family name. At issue was the fact that Flick's fortune stemmed from the wealth of his grandfather, Friedrich Flick, a German industrialist closely associated with the Nazi regime who exploited slave labor in his factories. Flick withdrew the donation to Balliol in March 1996. Discusses factors affecting public awareness of the role of German business in the Nazi government's actions against the Jews. Sees the "German economic miracle" of the 1950s-60s as largely a myth; Germany emerged from the war financially strong with its industrial base largely intact. The false claim that postwar German wealth was not built on wealth accumulated in the Nazi era enabled Germans to distance themselves morally and psychologically from the crimes of the Third Reich.
Note: On a controversial donation to Oxford University in 1995 by the grandson of the Nazi Friedrich Flick.

Abstract: For many centuries, Germany has enjoyed a reputation as the 'land of music'. But just how was this reputation established and transformed over time, and to what extent was it produced within or outside of Germany? Through case studies that range from Bruckner to the Beatles and from symphonies to dance-club music, this volume looks at how German musicians and their audiences responded to the most significant developments of the twentieth century, including mass media, technological advances, fascism, and war on an unprecedented scale.
