Abstract:
Describes antisemitism in the socialist movement, in particular the relationship between socialist theory of the 19th-20th centuries and radical (socialist) theology in regard to Christianity vis-à-vis Judaism, with examples from the thought of Bruno Bauer, Karl Marx, and Karl Kautsky. States that the (socialist) theologian-turned-atheist believes Christianity to contain a higher element of truth than Judaism, and denies Judaism, even in its dissolution, an equal rank with Christianity. This view is extant today in relation to the New Left’s attitudes toward Israel and the Middle East conflict; the Jewish state is denied the right to exist.
