Abstract:
Relates, particularly, to rising antisemitism in Poland in the 1930s. Discusses the lack of unity of the Zionist movement in Poland, which was split into three separate organizations - Central Poland, Eastern Galicia, Western Galicia and Silesia - and which had different views on how to respond to government policies. Some Zionist leaders insisted on opposing the government, especially when it became officially antisemitic in the second half of the 1930s, while others advocated cooperation in order to moderate government policies and to find a solution for the "Jewish question" by settling Jews outside of Poland (preferably in Eretz Israel). But the lack of a solution via emigration increased the Jews' frustration with Zionism (many supported the Bund instead), and also led to increased antisemitism. By the end of the 1930s, the Zionist establishment had no power in the political system, was constantly on the defensive, and was not prepared to lead the people in the trying times ahead.
