Cortissos was a Jew born in Antwerp. During the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) he financed the Portuguese army, with a promise from the British that they would return the loan if the Portuguese did not. In 1712 he and his family moved to England in hopes of retrieving his money, but he was never reimbursed and he died in penury in 1742.
