Abstract:
The German-Jewish legal historian Guido Kisch (1889–1985) was forced to leave Germany in 1935 and went into exile in the USA. His research on medieval German law, humanism and Jewish communities was widely known within the scientific community. Less is known about his Jewishness and the influence of traditional Jewish views on his scholarly work. It would seem that this is due to his belief that legal analyses and research should be kept separate from personal influences and interests – an opinion which appears to be based on Max Weber’s theory of positivism.
