Abstract:
Presents a brief survey of Christian anti-Jewish prejudice throughout the centuries, and then focuses on opposition to the Eastern European Jewish immigration to Britain between 1881-1905, comparing it to opposition to New Commonwealth immigration after 1945. In both cases, the numbers of immigrants were grossly exaggerated, they were unfairly accused of stealing jobs from British workers, the race issue was exploited by politicians to advance themselves, and all this led to restrictive immigration legislation. Notes, also, a strong resentment on the part of Britons of the Jews' cultural differences as expressed in language, dress, religion, and social customs, and the suspicion of dual loyalty. Warns of the need to combat racism, "theological denigration" of other religions, and the recent growth in exclusivist forms of Christianity.
