Abstract:
Lévy was a French lawyer and a journalist. He was also an anti-clericalist, a freemason, a republican, and a socialist who supported the 1848 Revolution and the Paris Commune. Born in a Roman Catholic family, but with a Jewish grandfather, he was passionate about achieving the Jews' emancipation in European countries and the abolition of the requirement that a Jew convert in order to serve in public office.
