Abstract:
The archive of the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland (1939-43), comprising ca. 30,000 pages of documents, is located at Potsdam. In the mid-1960s permission was granted to reproduce parts of the archive. A project to reconstruct the archive was instituted, taking the 3,000 reproductions obtained as a basis and adding material found in 34 other archives (mainly in Israel and West Germany), now reaching a total of 16,000 pages. Describes the archive's importance in shedding light on the activities of the organization, particularly in the spheres of education, emigration, and social aid, and in regard to its official standing both internally (acceptance by German Jewry) and externally (de facto recognition by the Nazi regime and by Jewish communities abroad). Emphasizes that the papers show clearly that the Reichsvereinigung was the direct successor of the Reichsvertretung as the organization representing the Jewish communities of Germany, and was not set up to serve the purposes of the RSHA as has been claimed by various historians.
