Abstract:
Up to 1864-1866 most Swiss cantons did not allow Jews to migrate. The majority of Swiss Jews were restricted to rural communities, to the estates of minor foreign nobility. The political and social background for these restrictions are described on pp. 284-287, and the struggle for emancipation after international pressure on pp. 288-289.
