Abstract:
Compares and contrasts Arab reactions in Libya and Tunisia to the anti-Jewish racial laws and discriminatory measures between 1940-43. In Libya the general reaction was disinterest, while in Tunisia it was more ambivalent due to the strong Muslim nationalist movement, which was influenced by Nazi antisemitic propaganda but also wanted Jewish support in fighting the colonial oppressors. Testimonies of Jews regarding day-to-day life indicate fairly good relations in the economic and cultural spheres in both countries, with occasional oubursts of Muslim attacks against Jews. With the increase in persecution of the Jews in 1943, the attitude of the Arab lower classes was characterized by three manifestations: village Arabs sheltered Jews fleeing from the cities in return for payment, Arabs sold food to Jews in forced labor units (albeit, at exorbitant prices), and Arabs looted abandoned Jewish homes. Describes the pogrom in Gabès (Tunisia) in May 1941 and the more violent pogrom in Tripoli (Libya) and surroundings in November 1945 in which 130 Jews were killed, 265 wounded, nine synagogues were burned, and 4,000 Jews were left homeless. The perpetrators were Muslim nationalists incited by Arab Nazi sympathizers. Violent incidents increased after 1945 and most of the Jews emigrated.
