Abstract:
Describes the attitudes towards Jews of the Polish intelligentsia and the liberal parties, led by Aleksander Świętochowski, a writer and journalist, between 1905-14. The liberals were opposed to nationalism and socialism, and believed in gradual progress. Their ideas were a continuation of the Warsaw positivism expressed in the second half of the 19th century. Like the positivists, they advocated the assimilation and Polonization of the Jews, and combated antisemitism. A change in these attitudes occurred after 1910, caused by the immigration of Russian Jews (the so-called "Litvaks" who had no ties with Polish culture) and the growth of Polish and Jewish nationalism. Świętochowski's openness towards Jews was thus transformed into a form of antisemitism, with exception made for assimilated Jews.
