    Abstract: Das Denken in Dichotomien war im 19. Jahrhundert weit verbreitet: männlich - weiblich, Produktion - Reproduktion, Verstand - Gefühl, Interpret - Virtuose, Heilige - Hure, deutsch - undeutsch, christlich - jüdisch, Geist - Natur usw. Wer als Musikkritiker, Musikwissenschaftler oder Biograph eine Wahrnehmung zu beschreiben und zu bewerten hatte, bediente sich gern dieser Topoi, um seine Wahrnehmung im Feld dieser Markierungen zu verorten, um Urteilen Kontur zu verleihen und sie in Rezeptionsraster einzufügen, die er auch bei seinen LeserInnen vermuten konnte. Das Anliegen dieses Buches ist es, verschiedene dieser Dichotomien zueinander ins Verhältnis zu setzen und insbesondere diejenigen Wertungen, die mit dem Gegensatzpaar männlich - weiblich verknüpft sind, mit den Wertungen anderer Dichotomien abzugleichen. Auf diese Weise ist eine Arbeit entstanden, die die Auswirkungen des Geschlechterdiskurses auf die Herausbildung von nationaler und konfessioneller Identität, Militarisierung und Antisemitismus in eindrucksvoller Weise verdeutlicht.

    Abstract: "Sara Levy nâee Itzig (1761-1854), a salonniáere, skilled performing musician, and active participant in enlightened Prussian Jewish society, played a powerful role in shaping the dynamic cultural world of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Berlin. A patron and collector of music, she studied harpsichord with Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-84) and commissioned musical compositions from both Friedemann and his brother Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-88). Archival evidence demonstrates Levy's position as an essential link in the transmission of the music of their father, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), and as a catalyst for the "Bach revival" of the early nineteenth century, which was led by her great-nephew Felix Mendelssohn.     Abstract: Die 1911 erbaute Steinmeyer-Orgel der Christuskirche Mannheim ist mit 98 Registern, verteilt auf vier Manuale und Pedal, die größte denkmalgeschützte Orgel im Land Baden-Württemberg. Gemeinsam mit der ebenfalls 1911 eingeweihten Christuskirche ist die Steinmeyer-Orgel Zeugnis einer künstlerisch-technischen Meisterleis­tung des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Konzipiert im Austausch von deutschen und französischen Orgelspezialisten liegt in ihr eine Synthese von elsässischen Reformbestrebungen und romantischem Klang­ideal vor. Schon wenige Jahre nach ihrer Erbauung als Mannheimer Wunderwerk tituliert, überdauerte sie zwei Weltkriege. Mit der großen Restaurierung 2016 bis 2018, die zahlreiche technischen Reparaturen umfasste, konnte die Steinmeyer-Orgel auch wieder in den klanglichen Urzustand zurückversetzt werden. Diese Festschrift zeichnet die Geschichte dieses außergewöhnlichen Instrumentes von seiner Entstehung bis heute lebendig nach.

    Abstract: Dem erinnerungskulturellen Umgang mit dem Holocaust steht ein tiefgehender Wandel bevor: Wenn die letzten Überlebenden in den nächsten Jahren sterben, geht die Erinnerung vom kommunikativen in das kulturelle Gedächtnis über. Zugleich wird die sich erinnernde Gesellschaft immer heterogener und die Schüler_innen gehören inzwischen vollständig zur Generation der digital natives. Online-Archive mit videografierten Interviews bieten angesichts dieser Entwicklungen scheinbar eine Zukunftsperspektive für den Unterricht. Die didaktischen Herausforderungen, die der Einsatz von videografierten Zeitzeug_inneninterviews aufwirft, sind dabei vielfältig. Die vorliegende Studie ist die erste im Bereich der historisch-politischen Bildung, die empirisch abgesicherte Befunde zu den relevanten Fragen liefert: Kann die in der Theoriebildung zu digitalisierten Zeugnissen behauptete 'Begegnung' mit den Überlebenden auf dem Bildschirm tatsächlich festgestellt werden? Sind die in der Theorie benannten 'Immersionseffekte' der Interviews für die unterrichtliche Praxis nutzbar zu machen? Welche 'eigen-sinnigen Sinnbildungen' nehmen Lernende in der Arbeit mit den lebensgeschichtlichen Narrativen vor? Wo verlaufen die Grenzen des Mediums gerade auch im Blick auf leistungsschwächere Schüler_innen an Sekundarschulen? Wie müsste Unterricht in der Zukunft anders gedacht und gestaltet werden, um eine inklusivere Holocaust Education ohne (rassistische) Ausgrenzungen zu ermöglichen? Quelle: Klappentext.

    Abstract: Der Nationalsozialistische Lehrerbund hatte 97 % der Pädagoginnen und Pädagogen organisiert. Anhand seines Zentralorgans wird gezeigt, inwiefern der NSLB seit 1933 fester Bestandteil des Nazi-Systems war. Der Nationalsozialistische Lehrerbund hatte 97 % der Pädagoginnen und Pädagogen organisiert. Ein Drittel davon waren NSDAP-Mitglieder. Dennoch hält sich die Verharmlosung des NSLB auch in der Erziehungswissenschaft immer noch hartnäckig. Die vorliegende Studie weist anhand der Analyse des Zentralorgans des NSLB nach, dass und inwiefern der NSLB eben nicht eine harmlose Berufsorganisation war, sondern dass er seit 1933 fester Bestandteil des verbrecherischen NS-Systems war. Der Verband war Teil des Nazi-Regimes, das die Hetze, Rassismus und Judenfeindschaft des NSLB zur Vorbereitung und als Begleitung der realen Mordprogramme durchaus benötigte. Benjamin Ortmeyer, Apl. Prof. Dr. habil., ist außerplanmäßiger Professor am Fachbereich Erziehungswissenschaften der Johann Wolfgang-Goethe Universität Frankfurt und Leiter der Forschungsstelle NS-Pädagogik. 1996 erhielt er für seine Arbeit den Heinz-Galinski-Preis der Jüdischen Gemeinde Berlin.

    Note: Although Jews were readmitted to England in 1661, nearly 200 years later there was an election for Chief Rabbi where the short list of candidates was all German. Today the community takes its British spiritual leadership for granted, but the whole structure had to be created from scratch, and Jews' College has played a major part in this for over 150 years. This is the story of those who did the work and fought against the general indifference of a community that so often only paid lip service to the concept. There was also the struggle between lay leaders wanting ministers to be synagogue bureaucrats, and College Principals who wanted Talmudic scholars. The Principals prevailed, educating the bedrock of ministers who grew and nurtured congregations all over Britain and abroad. The achievements of men like Louis Loewe, Michael Friedländer, Adolph Büchler, Isidore Epstein, Kopul Kahana, Hirsch Zimmels, Nahum Rabinovitch, Irving Jacobs, Jonathan Sacks and Rafi Zarum deserve recognition. Their material sacrifice and intellectual rigour demanded total commitment from their students. This is their story, and the healthy state of the Jewish community in Britain today owes a great deal to their selfless efforts

    Abstract: "The Promise of Integrated and Multicultural Bilingual Education presents the results of a long-term ethnographic study of the integrated bilingual Palestinian-Jewish schools in Israel that offer a new educational option to two groups of Israelis--Palestinians and Jews--who have been in conflict for the last one hundred years. Their goal is to create egalitarian bilingual multicultural environments to facilitate the growth of youth who can acknowledge and respect "others" while maintaining loyalty to their respective cultural traditions. In this book, Bekerman reveals the complex school practices implemented while negotiating identity and culture in contexts of enduring conflict. Data gathered from interviews with teachers, students, parents, and state officials are presented and analyzed to explore the potential and limitations of peace education given the cultural resources, ethnic-religious affiliations, political beliefs, and historical narratives of the various interactants. The book concludes with critique of Western positivist paradigmatic perspectives that currently guide peace education, maintaining that one of the primary weaknesses of current bilingual and multicultural approaches to peace education is their failure to account for the primacy of the political framework of the nation state and the psychologized educational perspectives that guide their educational work. Change, it is argued, will only occur after these perspectives are abandoned, which entails critically reviewing present understandings of the individual, of identity and culture, and of the learning process"--

    Abstract: Der von Antonina Klokova und Jascha Nemtsov herausgegebene Band präsentiert Aufsätze von Musikwissenschaftlern und Historikern, die die jüdische Musikkultur aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven betrachten. Der Schwerpunkt ist dabei die jüdische Musik im europäischen kulturellen Kontext. Der von Eric Werner geprägte Ausdruck der „sacred bridge“, der sich auf Wechselwirkungen der jüdischen und der frühchristlichen Musik bezieht, wird dabei in seiner Gültigkeit für die gesamte jüdische Kulturgeschichte hinterfragt. Jüdische Musik ist keine exotische Kultur, sondern zum großen Teil ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der europäischen Musik. Sie wird als offenes Phänomen behandelt, das vielfältige Einflüsse aufnahm, aber auch Impulse an die nichtjüdische Umgebung gab. In Zeiten der Verfolgung und Ausgrenzung wurde dieser gegenseitige Austausch jedoch auf eine „Einbahnstraße“ reduziert. Während die Juden durchgehend an einem kulturellen Transfer interessiert waren, wurde ihre eigene Kultur zeitweise kaum wahrgenommen. Insgesamt bietet dieser interdisziplinär angelegte Sammelband ein breites und facettenreiches Bild der jüdischen musikalischen Kultur vor allem in Ost- und Mitteleuropa in ihrem kulturhistorischen Kontext – eines Gebiets also, das zu einem großen Teil immer noch als Desideratum zu bezeichnen ist. Die Publikation leistet somit einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Erforschung und Wiedergewinnung dieser teilweise verloren gegangenen musikalischen Kultur für das heutige Kulturleben.

    Abstract: Das Judentum ist als pädagogisch wirkender Kulturzusammenhang anzusehen, der global und interkulturell zu betrachten ist. In drei Etappen – von der Binnenperspektive zu transkulturellen Aneignungen – stellt der Band die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang von Bildung und Kultur neu. Im ersten Teil werden pädagogische Strukturen des kulturell institutionalisierten Judentums aus einer Binnenperspektive historisch begründet.     Abstract: "Texts often occupy a central role within ritual practices. They serve as prescripts for the organization of the ritual or as an explanation of cosmological backgrounds, as records of ritual performance, or simply as items that are handled and recited during the performance itself. Musical texts may assume some of these roles within certain ceremonial procedures, especially in serving as prescripts for recitation, but also as ritual paraphernalia (for example, where collectors aer concerned). Most importantly, they may serve as records of the performance of those rituals in which music forms a central part, as is the case with opera productions. This volume aims to identify the mechanisms according to which texts, and especially musical texts, may become ritual agents in their own right. It assesses the value of such texts as sources for the reconstruction of rituals, and discusses questions of how ritual aspects of these texts may be represented in modern editions. Calico examines the cultural history of postwar Europe through the lens of the performance and reception of Arnold Schoenberg's A Survivor from Warsaw--a short but powerful work, she argues, capable of irritating every exposed nerve in postwar Europe. A twelve-tone piece in three languages about the Holocaust, it was written for an American audience by a Jewish composer whose oeuvre had been one of the Nazis' prime exemplars of entartete (degenerate) music. Both admired and reviled as a pioneer of dodecaphony, Schoenberg had immigrated to the United States and become an American citizen. This book investigates the meanings attached to the work as it circulated through Europe during the early Cold War in a kind of symbolic musical remigration, focusing on six case studies: West Germany, Austria, Norway, East Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. Each case is unique, informed by individual geopolitical concerns, but this analysis also reveals common themes in anxieties about musical modernism, Holocaust memory and culpability, the coexistence of Jews and former Nazis, anti-Semitism, dislocation, and the presence of occupying forces on both sides of the Cold War divide"--

Eine Standortbestimmung und eine gute Definition machen den Anfang, den Hauptteil nimmt eine Geschichte der Comics im 20. Jahrhundert (weiter eingeteilt in geografische Unterabschnitte) ein, der abschließende Part - zum 21. Jahrhundert - bietet Beschreibungen des Status quo und einen Ausblick. Schikowski belässt es jedoch nicht bei einer bloßen Chronologie, sondern arbeitet, wie der Untertitel verspricht, in die Historie theoretische Grundlagen und Kurzbiografien prägender Autoren/Zeichner ein. Fast 120 Jahre Comics auf knapp 300 Seiten abzuhandeln, erfordert präzises Arbeiten. Das erfüllt der Autor voll und ganz, seine Ausführungen sind konzentriert, aber sehr gehaltvoll und verständlich geschrieben, die Schwarz-Weiß-Bildbeispiele hätten jedoch etwas zahlreicher sein können.     Abstract: With National Socialism's arrival in Germany in 1933, Jews dominated music more than virtually any other sector, making it the most important cultural front in the Nazi fight for German identity. This groundbreaking book looks at the Jewish composers and musicians banned by the Third Reich and the consequences for music throughout the rest of the twentieth century. Because Jewish musicians and composers were, by 1933, the principal conveyors of Germany's historic traditions and the ideals of German culture, the isolation, exile and persecution of Jewish musicians by the Nazis became an act of musical self-mutilation. Michael Haas looks at the actual contribution of Jewish composers in Germany and Austria before 1933, at their increasingly precarious position in Nazi Europe, their forced emigration before and during the war, their ambivalent relationships with their countries of refuge, such as Britain and the United States and their contributions within the radically changed post-war music environment. -- Jacket

Die Analyse von Begegnungen zwischen jüdischen, russischen, deutschen, israelischen und muslimischen Traditionen offenbart einen ungezwungenen Umgang mit jüdischer Religion und Symbolik, jüdischer Essenstradition und Mode.Diese ethnologische Studie zeigt: Es ist ein Umgang »koscher light«, in dem sich Religion und Tradition nach den Gesetzen der Urbanität richten.
    Abstract: What role do spatial aspects play for the identity work and community education of young Russian-speaking Jews who now live in Germany? Alina Gromova has accompanied 15 young adults for a year through their daily lives and followed them to places like Jewish dates and parties, cafés and homes, synagogues and clubs. Her analysis of encounters between Jewish, Russian, German, Israeli, and Muslim traditions reveals a casual handling of Jewish religion, symbolism, food tradition, and fashion. This ethnographic study exhibits the dealings of Generation »Kosher Light«, in which religion and tradition conform to the laws of urbanity.

    Abstract: Aus dem Vorwort: Das mediale, politische und wissenschaftliche Interesse am Zusammenhang von internationalen Wanderungsbewegungen und Entwicklungsprozessen in Ländern des globalen Südens wächst seit einigen Jahren zusehends. Migration & Development gehört mittlerweile zu den Diskursen der Gegenwart mit nachhaltiger Präsenz. Die vorliegende Publikation versteht sich als ein Werkstattbericht. Aus der disziplinären Perspektive der Geographie möchte sie zu einer kritischen Reflexion des deutlich politisierten Nexus von Migration und Entwicklung anregen. Gleichzeitig kann dieses Heft aber auch als ein Schritt auf der Suche nach dem originär ›geographischen Beitrag‹ zu der Diskussion gelesen werden.
