Abstract:
States that in the 12th century "more Jews were being killed or threatened with death in northern Europe than in any other previous period in its history". This made the question of tolerance of the Jews far more than merely academic. The 12th-century Parisian theologians Peter Lombard and Peter Cantor read the Bible to determine guiding principles of Christian-Jewish relations. Following Augustine, they determined that while the Jews remained enemies of Christ and Christianity, they should be allowed to live, as their existence provides a service to Christianity. Although this view was not novel, its enunciation by these prominent scholars guaranteed it an important place in medieval theology.
