Abstract:
Briefly summarizes views on the Holocaust of Jewish theologians, including Richard Rubenstein, Eliezer Berkovits, Emil Fackenheim, Norman Bronznick, Zvi Hirsch Meisels, the Lubavitcher Rebbe (Menahem Mendel Schneersohn), Menahem Hartom, and Michael Wyschogrod. Examines their views on the uniqueness of the Holocaust, theodicy after the Holocaust, and why Jews should continue living as Jews even without an explanation of the catastrophe. Schulman notes that his own views are most consonant with those of Hartom, who sees the Holocaust as a punishment for assimilation; Bronznick, who points out that God can punish an individual for the sins of the community; and Berkovits, who stresses that God gave man free will.
