    Kurzfassung: In Warsaw Ghetto Police, Katarzyna Person shines a spotlight on the lawyers, engineers, young yeshiva graduates, and sons of connected businessmen who, in the autumn of 1940, joined the newly formed Jewish Order Service.Person tracks the everyday life of policemen as their involvement with the horrors of ghetto life gradually increased. Facing and engaging with brutality, corruption, and the degradation and humiliation of their own people, these policemen found it virtually impossible to exercise individual agency. While some saw the Jewish police as fellow victims, others viewed them as a more dangerous threat than the German occupation authorities; both were held responsible for the destruction of a historically important and thriving community. Person emphasizes the complexity of the situation, the policemen's place in the network of social life in the ghetto, and the difficulty behind the choices that they made. By placing the actions of the Jewish Order Service in historical context, she explores both the decisions that its members were forced to make and the consequences of those actions.Featuring testimonies of members of the Jewish Order Service, and of others who could see them as they themselves could not, Warsaw Ghetto Police brings these impossible situations to life. It also demonstrates how a community chooses to remember those whose allegiances did not seem clear

For those seeking to learn more about the people who once lived and died at those sites, however, there has until now been no comprehensive account in English of the region's Jews.Prague and Beyond presents a new and accessible history of the Jews of the Bohemian Lands written by an international team of scholars. It offers a multifaceted account of the Jewish people in a region that has been, over the centuries, a part of the Holy Roman Empire and the Habsburg Monarchy, was constituted as the democratic Czechoslovakia in the years following the First World War, became the Nazi Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and later a postwar Communist state, and is today's Czech Republic.     Kurzfassung: This collection of essays investigates signs of toleration, recognition, respect and other positive forms of interaction between and within religious groups of late antiquity. At the same time, it acknowledges that examples of tolerance are significantly fewer in ancient sources than examples of intolerance and are often limited to insiders, while outsiders often met with contempt, or even outright violence. The essays take both perspectives seriously by analysing the complexity pertaining to these encounters. Religious concerns, ethnicity, gender and other social factors central to identity formation were often intertwined and they yielded different ways of drawing the limits of tolerance and intolerance. This book enhances our understanding of the formative centuries of Jewish and Christian religious traditions. It also brings the results of historical inquiry into dialogue with present-day questions of religious tolerance

    Kurzfassung: In this unique "history from below," Destination Elsewhere chronicles encounters between Displaced Persons in Europe and the Allied agencies who were tasked with caring for them after the Second World War. The struggle to define who was a Displaced Person and who was not was a subject of intense debate and deliberation among humanitarians, international law experts, immigration planners, and governments. What has not adequately been recognized is that Displaced Persons also actively participated in this emerging refugee conversation. Displaced Persons endured war, displacement, and resettlement, but these experiences were not defined by passivity and speechlessness. Instead, they spoke back, creating a dialogue that in turn helped shape the modern idea of the refugee. As Ruth Balint shows, what made a good or convincing story at the time tells us much about the circulation of ideas about the war, about the Holocaust, and about the Jews. Those stories depict the emerging moral and legal distinction between economic migrants and political refugees. They tell us about the experiences of women and children in the face of new psychological and political interventions into the family. Stories from Displaced Persons also tells us something about the enduring myth of the new world for people who longed to leave the old. Balint focuses on those whose storytelling skills became a major strategy for survival and escape out of the Displaced Persons' camps and out of the Europe. Their stories are brought alive in Destination Elsewhere, alongside a new history of immigration, statelessness, and the institution of the postwar family

    Kurzfassung: "In 1918, as Europe's continental empires were violently replaced with a patchwork of nominally post-imperial nation-states, elites in Poland drew on the global language of civilization to launch a state-building mission in the non-ethnically Polish, nationally contested, and war-torn region of Volhynia. By following eastward in the footsteps of border guards, military settlers, provincial administrators, regional activists, health professionals, urban planners, teachers, and academics, the work traces how a colorful cast of characters adapted the prevailing language of European imperialism while simultaneously rejecting the very idea that they could act imperialistically in an historically Polish borderland. Their tension-ridden approaches were never static. Some Polish nationalists declared that they alone could act as benign civilizational conduits in mainly Ukrainian villages and predominantly Jewish towns, while others attempted to craft a regional identity. But by the eve of the Second World War, the province had become a testing ground for visions of demographic transformation that favoured antisemitic schemes of Jewish emigration and the forced assimilation of non-Polish Slavs. Throughout, doubts about the national strength of local Poles, competitions between diverse groups of self-declared civilizers, and mounting anxieties about the rise of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, meant that Volhynia served as an arena for redefining the precise contours of the modern Polish nation. Rather than simply a successor state embroiled in the quintessentially east European problem of "national minorities," Poland was a place where people engaged with the concept of civilization, recasting its meaning in conceptual spaces between empire and nation-state"--

    Kurzfassung: In eleven contributions, Visual Antisemitism in Central Europe, Imagery of Hatred deals with visual manifestations of antisemitism in Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. The publication, which presents heretofore largely unknown materials, seeks responses from diverse perspectives to the question of the role of visuality in the development of antisemitic moods and political agendas that encouraged hatred towards Jews. The scope of visual anti-Judaism and antisemitism always was and still is very wide: from stereotypical depictions that can conceal an underlying message through humorous content, to clearly formulated assaults that aim to escalate animosity towards an imaginary collective enemy. The goal in both these cases is the exclusion of Jews from the majority society imagined as a monolithic whole, and the reification of a dividing line between "us" and "them". With its wide thematic and methodological range, this book offers a comprehensive image of the phenomenon of visual anti-Judaism and antisemitism and provides rich comparative material for the entire Central European region
    Kurzfassung: In what way has anti-Semitism influenced fine art and visual culture in Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day? Is there an embedded anti-Semitic iconography? Why does visual antisemitism arise today? The volume will deal also with questions of how to write about the visual history of anti-Semitism and exhibit anti-Semitic works to the public without contributing to the support of hate movements

    Kurzfassung: This book charts the diachronic dimension of the processes by which Andalusi Muslim and Jewish elites created, asserted, refined, and adapted to new circumstances their respective claims of Andalusi and Sefardi singularity. The historical starting point for this inquiry-the mid-tenth century-is established by the textual evidence that has come down to us. The endpoint of this study's historical parameters is occasioned by social, religious, and political upheaval, collective trauma, and their jarring effects on cultural memory. For the Jews of Sefarad, the mid-twelfth century witnessed disruption within Andalusi Jewish society and transformation of its traditions. It saw the dispersal of most of the Jews of al-Andalus to the Iberian Christian kingdoms, to Provence, and to North Africa, where Andalusi Jewish exiles found refuge and Andalusi Jewish cultural production was relaunched in modified forms. For Andalusi Muslims, the Almohad military defeat at Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, known in Arabic historiography as the monumental Battle of al-'Iqāb, and the Almohads' ensuing withdrawal from Andalusi territory signaled the end of the classical age of al-Andalus. Within a generation, Córdoba and Seville fell to Castilian control, leaving the Naṣrid kingdom of Granada-all that was left of al-Andalus-as the sole remaining outpost of an Islamic polity and society on Iberian soil down to 1492

    Kurzfassung: In 16 Beiträgen unterschiedlicher Autor*innen werden Jüdinnen (leider nur zwei!) und Juden vorgestellt, die sich bewusst dafür entschieden, nach Ende des 2. Weltkriegs in der sowjetischen Besatzungszone bzw. der DDR zu leben. Es sind Intellektuelle, Gemeindefunktionäre, Politiker, Kulturschaffende, darunter der Romanist Victor Klemperer, die Schriftsteller Arnold Zweig, Stefan Heym, Fred Wander und Jurek Becker, der Liedermacher Wolf Biermann; die Schriftstellerin Barbara Honigmann ist die einzige Porträtierte, die der Zweiten Generation angehört. Bei diesen biografischen Erkundungen stehen vor allem das Leben nach dem Überleben, das Verhältnis zur DDR und zum Judentum im Mittelpunkt. In einigen Beiträgen fliessen auch persönliche Erinnerungen an die Porträtierten ein. Mit einer Einführung und einem Literaturverzeichnis. - Bemerkenswert ist die Vielfalt der Lebenswege, politischen Haltungen, jüdischen Identitäten, die in den Texten zum Ausdruck kommen und den Blick auf die Geschichte der DDR und 1700 Jahre jüdisches Leben in Deutschland erweitern.     Kurzfassung: Educating Palestine, through the story of education and the teaching of history in Mandate Palestine, reframes our understanding of the Palestinian and Zionist national movements. It argues that Palestinian and Hebrew pedagogy could only be truly understood through an analysis of the conscious or unconscious dialogue between them. The conflict over Palestine, the study shows, shaped the way Arabs and Zionists thought, taught, and wrote about their past. British rule over Palestine promised the Jews a national home, but had no viable policy towards the Palestinians and established an education system that lacked a sustainable collective ethos. Nevertheless, Palestinian educators were able to produce a national pedagogy that knew how to work with the British and simultaneously promoted an ideology of progress and independence that challenged colonial rule

    Kurzfassung: This work, the fruit of intense research work spanning several years, examines the first serious attempt by the descendants of the Sephardim—the Jews expelled from Spain in 1492—to “return to Sepharad” more than three decades after the abolition of the Inquisition. At the beginning of the nineteenth century a trend towards historical revisionism, backed by Liberals, whose influence was pivotal at the Cortes de Cádiz (the national assembly convened to assert Spanish sovereignty, introduce reform, and establish a modern Spanish nation), combined with economic factors, culminated in the abolition of the Inquisition in 1834. This paved the way, ideologically, for the freedom of worship to be proclaimed in Spain on the heels of La Septembrina, or La Gloriosa, the September Revolution of 1868 in which Queen Isabel II was deposed. European Sephardic Jews, galvanized by their perception of a tolerant Spain, decided to undertake a major project to initiate negotiations with the Spanish state

    Kurzfassung: How the Jewish and Christian communities that emerged in the early Roman Empire navigated a ‘Hellenistic’ world is a longstanding and unsettled question. Recent scholarship on the intellectual cultures that developed among Greek speaking subjects of Rome in the so-called Second Sophistic as well as models for culture and competition informed by mathematical and economic game theories provide new ideas to address this question. This study offers a model for a kind of culture-making that accounts for how the cultural ecosystems of the Roman Empire enabled these religious communities to win legitimacy and build discourses of self-expression by competing on the same cultural fields as other Roman subjects. By considering a range of texts and figures—including Justin Martyr, Tatian, the ‘second’ Paul of the Acts of the Apostles, Lucian of Samosata, 4 Maccabees, and Favorinus of Arelate—this study contends that competing for legitimacy enabled those fledgling religious communities to express coherent cultural identities and secure social credibility within the complex milieu of Roman Imperial society

    Kurzfassung: This volume contributes to the growing interest in understanding the phenomenon of prayer and praying in the Hebrew Bible, Early Judaism, and nascent Christianity. Papers by the leading scholars in these fields revisit long-standing questions and chart new paths of inquiry into the nature, form, and practice of addressing the divine in the ancient world. The essays in this volume deal with particular texts of and about prayer, practices of prayer, as well as figures and locations (historical and literary) that are associated with prayer and praying. These studies apply a range of methods and theoretical approaches to prayer and the language of prayer in literatures of Early Judaism and Christianity. Some studies apply the classical methods of biblical studies to Second Temple texts of prayer, including form critical and text critical approaches; others engage in literary and narrative analysis of ancient works that recount discourse directed to the divine. Still other studies draw on anthropological and sociological analyses of prayer or marshal particular theories of discourse, ethics, and moral agency to offer fresh interpretations of address to God in the literature of Second Temple Judaism and earliest Christianity

    Kurzfassung: This is the first work in any language that offers both an overarching exploration of the flight and evacuation of Soviet Jews viewed at the macro level, and a personal history of one Soviet Jewish family. It is also the first study to examine Jewish life in the Northern Caucasus, a Soviet region that history scholars have rarely addressed. Drawing on a collection of family letters, Kiril Feferman provides a history of the Ginsburgs as they debate whether to evacuate their home of Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia and are eventually swept away by the Soviet-German War, the German invasion of Soviet Russia, and the Holocaust. The book makes a significant contribution to the history of the Holocaust and Second World War in the Soviet Union, presenting one Soviet region as an illustration of wartime social and media politics

    Kurzfassung: Antisemitismus ist ein umfassendes Phänomen der Ausgrenzung, das unabhängig von Alter, Religion, Herkunft, Bildungsabschluss, Geschlecht oder Hautfarbe auftritt. Somit liegt es im gesamtgesellschaftlichen Interesse, seine Ausdrucksformen und die ihm zugrunde liegenden Ursachen zu erkennen, zu begreifen und - aus der Geschichte lernend - wiederkehrende antisemitisch motivierte, eskalierende Bedrohungen rechtzeitig wahrzunehmen und zu unterbinden. Eine Auseinandersetzung mit antisemitischen Haltungen, Denkfiguren und Handlungen sowie ein faktenbasiertes Wissen gehören daher in den Kanon politischer Bildung. Dieses Buch erscheint in einem historischen Kontext, in dem Risse in der Fassade des gemeinsamen deutsch-jüdischen Gebäudes erkennbar geworden sind. Mit dem zunehmenden zeitlichen Abstand zum Nationalsozialismus und dem Verblassen der Erinnerung nehmen Geschichtskonstruktionen, Verzerrungen oder Leugnungen der historischen Geschehnisse zu. Subtile antisemitische Einstellungen werden immer häufiger durch offen vorgetragene juden- und israelfeindliche Positionen überlagert. Der Band diskutiert aktuelle Antisemitismus-Studien in Hinblick auf ihre pädagogischen Konsequenzen aus wissenschaftlichen, politischen und bildungspolitischen Perspektiven

    Kurzfassung: Die Studie widmet sich erstmals epochenübergreifend der jüdischen Beteiligung in der italienischen Frauenbewegung. Aus einer transnationalen Perspektive und auf der Basis neu erschlossener Egodokumente, zeitgenössischer Zeitschriften, den Archiven jüdischer Gemeinden sowie der Überlieferung von Polizei und Behörden richtet Ruth Nattermann den Fokus auf die Erfahrungen italienisch-jüdischer Protagonistinnen im liberalen Einheitsstaat, während des Ersten Weltkriegs und der faschistischen Diktatur bis 1945. Das Ziel besteht darin, die Spannungen des Emanzipationsprozesses zwischen Partizipation und Abgrenzung herauszuarbeiten sowie die Marginalisierung und Verfolgung während des faschistischen Regimes aus dem Blickwinkel jüdischer Frauen zu betrachten. Dass die faschistische Rassengesetzgebung des Jahres 1938 nicht das Ende einer idyllischen Integration, sondern den Höhepunkt einer langfristigen Entwicklung bildete, wird anhand der Untersuchung italienisch-jüdischer Akteurinnen in ihren Beziehungen zur nicht-jüdischen Mehrheitsgesellschaft eindrücklich demonstriert. Trotz ihres bedeutenden Einflusses auf die transnationale Orientierung der italienischen Frauenbewegung blieb ihre Emanzipation als Frauen und Jüdinnen unvollkommen

    Kurzfassung: Die hier vorgelegten Texte zum Thema der Verdrängung und des Wiederauftauchens des nationalsozialistischen „Untergrunds“ sind im Laufe von drei Jahrzehnten entstanden. Zu ihrer Veröffentlichung (in Gestalt eines Folgebandes seiner 2012 erschienenen Interventionen) wurde der Autor durch das Hallesche Attentat (vom 9. 10. 2019) und durch die (abermals) hilflosen Reaktionen von „Politik“ und Öffentlichkeit motiviert. Die Unfähigkeit, den Zusammenhang der langen Reihe antisemitischer und ausländerfeindlicher Untaten und das (internationale) Netz der vermeintlich „isolierten Einzeltäter“ zu erkennen, führt er auf die Flucht in die Amnesie zurück, mit der sich die in das große Morden verstrickte „Volksgemeinschaft“ 1945 aus ihrer Geschichte zu stehlen versuchte. Das damals eingeübte und den Folgegenerationen einprägte „pathische Vergessen“ hat bis heute jeder „Aufarbeitung der Vergangenheit“ widerstanden.

    Kurzfassung: In 1230, Jews in the English city of Norwich were accused of having seized and circumcised a five-year-old Christian boy named Edward because they "wanted to make him a Jew." Contemporaneous accounts of the "Norwich circumcision case," as it came to be called, recast this episode as an attempted ritual murder. Contextualizing and analyzing accounts of this event and others, with special attention to the roles of children, Paola Tartakoff sheds new light on medieval Christian views of circumcision. She shows that Christian characterizations of Jews as sinister agents of Christian apostasy belonged to the same constellation of anti-Jewish libels as the notorious charge of ritual murder. Drawing on a wide variety of Jewish and Christian sources, Tartakoff investigates the elusive backstory of the Norwich circumcision case and exposes the thirteenth-century resurgence of Christian concerns about formal Christian conversion to Judaism. In the process, she elucidates little-known cases of movement out of Christianity and into Judaism, as well as Christian anxieties about the instability of religious identity.Conversion, Circumcision, and Ritual Murder in Medieval Europe recovers the complexity of medieval Jewish-Christian conversion and reveals the links between religious conversion and mounting Jewish-Christian tensions. At the same time, Tartakoff does not lose sight of the mystery surrounding the events that spurred the Norwich circumcision case, and she concludes the book by offering a solution of her own. She posits that Christians and Jews understood these events in fundamentally irreconcilable ways, illustrating the chasm that separated Christians and Jews in a world in which some Christians and Jews knew each other intimately

    Kurzfassung: Antisemitismus ist wieder sichtbar, teils offen, teils versteckt hinter "unbedachten" Äußerungen und Israelkritik. Doch wo beginnt der Antisemitismus, und wie neu ist, was wir heute erleben? Peter Schäfer beschreibt klar und konzise, wie sich seit der Antike antisemitische Stereotype verbreiteten, zu Verfolgung und Vernichtung führten und auch nach der Shoah virulent sind. Schon in der vorchristlichen Antike gab es Judenhass, Ghettos und Pogrome, doch erst die neutestamentlichen Schriften schufen mit ihrer Gegnerschaft zum Judentum die Voraussetzungen für Ritualmordlegenden und Verfolgungen im christlichen Mittelalter. Luther rief zur Auslöschung der "Teufelskinder" auf, die Aufklärer fanden das Judentum unvernünftig, Wissenschaftler begründeten den Judenhass rassistisch, und allzu viele waren bereit, sich an der "Endlösung der Judenfrage" zu beteiligen oder schauten lieber weg. Man könnte meinen, dass der Schock des Massenmordes heilsam war, doch Antizionismus und rechte Ideologien dringen seit Jahren mit antisemitischem Gepäck in die Mitte der Gesellschaft vor und bereiten den Boden für neue Gewalt. Peter Schäfers Buch ist Pflichtlektüre für alle, die besser verstehen wollen, warum der Antisemitismus so alt und zugleich so aktuell ist und was er für Juden in der Nachbarschaft, in Israel und überall auf der Welt bedeutet

    Kurzfassung: Impure Migration investigates the period from the 1890s until the 1930s, when prostitution was a legal institution in Argentina and the international community knew its capital city Buenos Aires as the center of the sex industry. At the same time, pogroms and anti-Semitic discrimination left thousands of Eastern European Jewish people displaced, without the resources required to immigrate. For many Jewish women, participation in prostitution was one of very few ways they could escape the limited options in their home countries, and Jewish men facilitate their transit and the organization of their work and social lives. Instead of marginalizing this story or reading it as a degrading chapter in Latin American Jewish history, Impure Migration interrogates a complicated social landscape to reveal that sex work is in fact a critical part of the histories of migration, labor, race, and sexuality

    Kurzfassung: When Venice conquered Crete in the early thirteenth century, a significant population of Jews lived in the capital and main port city of Candia. This community grew, diversified, and flourished both culturally and economically throughout the period of Venetian rule, and although it adhered to traditional Jewish ways of life, the community also readily engaged with the broader population and the island's Venetian colonial government.In Colonial Justice and the Jews of Venetian Crete, Rena N. Lauer tells the story of this unusual and little-known community through the lens of its flexible use of the legal systems at its disposal. Grounding the book in richly detailed studies of individuals and judicial cases—concerning matters as prosaic as taxation and as dramatic as bigamy and murder—Lauer brings the Jews of Candia vibrantly to life. Despite general rabbinic disapproval of such behavior elsewhere in medieval Europe, Crete's Jews regularly turned not only to their own religious courts but also to the secular Venetian judicial system. There they aired disputes between family members, business partners, spouses, and even the leaders of their community. And with their use of secular justice as both symptom and cause, Lauer contends, Crete's Jews grew more open and flexible, confident in their identity and experiencing little of the anti-Judaism increasingly suffered by their coreligionists in Western Europe

    Kurzfassung: "Pogroms and blood libels constitute the two classical and most extreme manifestations of tsarist antisemitism. They were often closely intertwined in history and memory, not least because the accusation of blood libel, the allegation that Jews murder Christian children to use their blood for ritual purposes, frequently triggered anti-Jewish violence. Such events were and are considered central to the Jewish experience in late tsarist Russia, the only country on earth with large scale anti-Jewish violence in the early twentieth century. Boasting its break from the tsarist period, the Soviet regime proudly claimed to have eradicated these forms of antisemitism. But, alas, life was much more complicated. The phenomenon and the memory of pogroms and blood libels in different areas of interwar Soviet Union-including Ukraine, Belorussia, Russia and Central Asia-as well as, after World War II, in the newly annexed territories of Lithuania, Western Ukraine and Western Belorussia are a reminder of continuities in the midst of revolutionary ruptures. The persistence, the permutation, and the responses to anti-Jewish violence and memories of violence suggest that Soviet Jews (and non-Jews alike) cohabited with a legacy of blood that did not vanish. This book traces the "afterlife" of these extreme manifestations of antisemitism in the USSR, and in doing so sheds light on the broader question of the changing position of Jews in Soviet society. One notable rupture in manifestations of antisemitism from tsarist to Soviet times included the virtual disappearance-at least during the interwar period-of the tight link between pogroms and blood allegations, indeed a common feature in the waves of anti-Jewish violence that erupted during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries." --

    Kurzfassung: Wie kann es sein, dass Menschen sich für Faschismus begeistern? Woher kommt diese Verachtung für alles, was als fremd und schwach empfunden wird? Kalle Johansson und Lena Berggren treffen sich in der Stadtbibliothek der schwedischen Stadt UmeÅ, um über diese Fragen zu sprechen. Er ist Comiczeichner, sie Geschichtsdozentin, und gemeinsam wollen sie verdeutlichen, was Faschismus ist, wie er entsteht und wie er bereits in einer frühen Phase erkannt werden kann.     Kurzfassung: Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg wurde München zum Schauplatz ungewöhnlicher politischer Konstellationen: Kurt Eisner wurde im November 1918 der erste jüdische Ministerpräsident eines deutschen Staates, während jüdische Schriftsteller wie Gustav Landauer, Ernst Toller und Erich Mühsam sich im April 1919 für die Räterepubliken engagierten. Die jüdische Gemeinde war eher konservativ ausgerichtet, und selbst die orthodoxen Mitglieder besuchten nach dem Synagogenbesuch gerne das Hofbräuhaus. Doch Anfang der zwanziger Jahre gab es bereits einen Nazi als Polizeipräsidenten, antijüdische Tendenzen in Politik, Presse und Kirche sowie Judenausweisungen und offene Gewalt gegen jüdische Bürger auf der Straße. Die "Stadt Hitlers" wie Thomas Mann die spätere "Hauptstadt der Bewegung" bereits im Juli 1923 nannte, wurde zum Ausgangspunkt für den beispiellosen Aufstieg der hier gegründeten nationalsozialistischen Partei

    Kurzfassung: An integrative approach to Jewish and Muslim philosophy in al-AndalusAl-Andalus, the Iberian territory ruled by Islam from the eighth to the fifteenth centuries, was home to a flourishing philosophical culture among Muslims and the Jews who lived in their midst. Andalusians spoke proudly of the region's excellence, and indeed it engendered celebrated thinkers such as Maimonides and Averroes. Sarah Stroumsa offers an integrative new approach to Jewish and Muslim philosophy in al-Andalus, where the cultural commonality of the Islamicate world allowed scholars from diverse religious backgrounds to engage in the same philosophical pursuits.Stroumsa traces the development of philosophy in Muslim Iberia from its introduction to the region to the diverse forms it took over time, from Aristotelianism and Neoplatonism to rational theology and mystical philosophy. She sheds light on the way the politics of the day, including the struggles with the Christians to the north of the peninsula and the Fāṭimids in North Africa, influenced philosophy in al-Andalus yet affected its development among the two religious communities in different ways.While acknowledging the dissimilar social status of Muslims and members of the religious minorities, Andalus and Sefarad highlights the common ground that united philosophers, providing new perspective on the development of philosophy in Islamic Spain

    Kurzfassung: Sowohl im rechten und linken politischen Spektrum als auch im radikalen Islam lässt sich der Hass auf Juden einerseits ideengeschichtlich nachzeichnen, andererseits an aktuellen Beispielen belegen. Samuel Salzborn versteht Antisemitismus als negative Leitidee der Moderne, die auf einer grundsätzlichen Ablehnung von Aufklärung, Liberalismus und Rationalität fußt. Die antisemitische Denkweise zeigt sich unter anderem in der Unwilligkeit, abstrakte, komplexe oder ambivalente Strukturen anzuerkennen, die die moderne Welt kennzeichnen, und fußt auf einer Fantasie, die Juden als homogenes Kollektiv wahrnimmt. Dies kulminiert in der Vorstellung einer "jüdischen Weltverschwörung", die ein strukturelles Merkmal sowohl rechtsextremer, antiimperialistischer und islamistischer antisemitischer Positionen darstellt. In Bezug auf den Staat Israel drückt sich der Antisemitismus, so Salzborn, in einer Strategie der "Dämonisierung, Delegitimerung und Doppelstandardisierung" aus, die der Autor auch der internationalen BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions)-Kampagne attestiert.
