Barcelona Disputation, Barcelona, Spain, 1263
Abstract:
Discusses the disputation in 1263 between Nahmanides and Pablo Christiani, presided over by King Jaime I and organized by Raymond de Peñaforte in order to promote conversion of the Jews. Deals with the policy and methodology of the Christians who tried to persuade the Jews by "friendly" theological strategies. Relates the arguments by Nahmanides and the false interpretations of them by his opponents. At the request of Pope Clemens IV, Jaime banned Nahmanides from Spain in 1267 (he fled to Eretz Israel in 1268). Concludes that the Barcelona disputation can be seen as a prototype of the later expulsion of the Jews from Spain: the policy of conversion leading to expulsion of all those who refused to convert.
