Abstract:
Describes the pro-Nazi activities of the Protestant theologian K.G. Kuhn (b. 1906), who joined the Nazi Party in 1932, and in 1933 delivered a speech in Tübingen supporting the Nazi racist views and anti-Jewish measures. He found negative features of the Jews embodied in the Talmud, and propagated the view of the Jews as a parasitical and dangerous people whom he saw as exploiting emancipation. In 1942 Kuhn was appointed extraordinary professor in Tübingen. In a postwar "apology", he falsely attributed his support for the Nazis to factors other than antisemitism. In 1949 he became an extraordinary professor at Göttingen, and in 1954 he was appointed professor for New Testament at Heidelberg due to his having become a specialist in Qumran studies. This outweighed his publications, statements, and behavior during the twelve years of the Nazi regime. The comment by Robert P. Ericksen, "Christians in the Nazi Era: A Problematic Story" notes, inter alia, Kuhn's opportunism.
