    Abstract: The Marrano phenomenon is a still unexplored element of Western culture: the presence of the borderline Jewish identity which avoids clear-cut cultural and religious attribution and – precisely as such – prefigures the advent of the typically modern "free-oscillating" subjectivity. Yet, the aim of the book is not a historical study of the Marranos (or conversos), who were forced to convert to Christianity, but were suspected of retaining their Judaism "undercover." The book rather applies the "Marrano metaphor" to explore the fruitful area of mixture and cross-over which allowed modern thinkers, writers and artists of the Jewish origin to enter the realm of universal communication – without, at the same time, making them relinquish their Jewishness which they subsequently developed as a "hidden tradition." The book poses and then attempts to prove the "Marrano hypothesis," according to which modern subjectivity derives, to paraphrase Cohen, "out of the sources of the hidden Judaism": modernity begins not with the Cartesian abstract ego, but with the rich self-reflexive self of Michel de Montaigne who wrestled with his own marranismo in a manner that soon became paradigmatic to other Jewish thinkers entering the scene of Western modernity, from Spinoza to Derrida. The essays in the volume offer thus a new view of a "Marrano modernity," which aims to radically transform our approach to the genesis of the modern subject and shed a new light on its secret religious life as surviving the process of secularization, although merely in the form of secret traces

    Abstract: The translation of the Torah into Greek in Alexandria is an intriguing puzzle. Why was it undertaken at all? Was it a need of the Alexandrian Jews? Or did the Jewish wisdom intrigue the Egyptian ruler? Is the legend of the miraculous creation of the Septuagint a manifesto of cultural assimilation into the Hellenic culture? Does the Alexandrian Greek biblical exegesis, especially that of Philo, aim to break with the Hebrew tradition? According to this book, Philo, although not fluent in Hebrew himself, moves in the same shared Hebrew-Greek Torah universe that a closer look on the Septuagint legend reveals as well. Die Übersetzung der Tora ins Griechische in Alexandrien ist ein intrigierendes Rätsel. Warum wurde sie überhaupt unternommen? War sie ein Bedürfnis der alexandrinischen Juden? Oder machte die jüdische Weisheit den ägyptischen Herrscher neugierig? Ist die Legende über die wundersame Entstehung der Septuaginta ein Manifest der kulturellen Assimilation an die hellenische Kultur?     Abstract: For Jews, Christians and Muslims, as for all human beings, military conflicts and war remain part of the reality of the world. The authoritative writings of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, namely the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament and the Koran, as well as the theological and philosophical traditions based on them, bear witness to this fact. Showing the influence of different historical political situations, various views – sometimes quite similar, sometimes more divergent -- have developed in the three religions to justify the waging of war under certain circumstances. Such views have also been integrated in different ways into legal systems while, in certain cases, theologies have provide legitimation for military expansion and atrocities. The aim of the volume The Concept of Just War in Judaism, Christianity and Islam is to explore the respective understanding of “just war” in each one of these three religions and to make their commonalities and differences discursively visible. In addition, it highlights and explains the significance of the topic to the present time. Can the concepts developed in the Jewish, Christian and Islamic traditions in order to justify war, serve as a foundation for contemporary peace ethics?     Abstract: Judenfeindschaft artikuliert sich sehr unterschiedlich. In den letzten Jahrzehnten ist eine Verschiebung von antijudaistischen zu antiisraelischen Diskursen zu beobachten, die gesellschaftlich erschreckend weit akzeptiert werden und nicht selten in einer judenfeindlichen Interpretation der neutestamentlichen Texte wurzeln. Ekkehard W. Stegemann und Wolfgang Stegemann machen seit vielen Jahren aufmerksam auf Judenfeindschaft und deren Deutungsmuster, die sich stets wandeln. Aspekte des Antijudaismus im Neuen Testament, Judenfeindschaft im frühen Christentum, aber auch das Verhältnis von Kirche und Israel als christliches Identitätsproblem gehören zu den Themen, die sie seit über 30 Jahren benennen.

    Abstract: Am 6. Mai 1939 wurde mit einem Festakt auf der Wartburg in Eisenach das »Institut zur Erforschung und Beseitigung des jüdischen Einflusses auf das deutsche kirchliche Leben« auf der Grundlage einer Entschließung von elf evangelischen Landeskirchen gegründet. Das Institut war eng mit der Ideologie und Organisation der aus Thüringen stammenden »Kirchenbewegung Deutsche Christen« verbunden. Ziel dieser kirchenpolitischen Bewegung war es, den christlichen Glauben und die Institution der Kirche den Vorgaben der nationalsozialistischen Weltanschauung anzupassen. Die »Forschungsarbeiten« des kirchlichen »Entjudungsinstituts« dienten dazu, die Ausgrenzungs- und Verfolgungspolitik der nationalsozialistischen Machthaber gegenüber den Juden zu unterstützen und den Antisemitismus als Grundpfeiler der nationalsozialistischen Rasseideologie zu legitimieren. [»De-Jewification« of Theology and Church. The Eisenach "Institute for the Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life" 1939-1945 On 6 May 1939, at a ceremony at the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, the »Institute for the Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life« was founded on the basis of a resolution passed by eleven Protestant regional churches. The Institute was closely connected with the ideology and organization of the »Church Movement German Christians«, which originated in Thuringia. The aim of this church political movement was to adapt the Christian faith and the institution of the church to the guidelines of the National Socialist world view. The »research work« of the ecclesiastical »Institute for De-Jewification« served to support the exclusion and persecution policy of the National Socialist rulers towards the Jews and to legitimize anti-Semitism as the cornerstone of the National Socialist racial ideology and to purify the Protestant Church from all alleged Jewish influences.

    Abstract: Die religiös-weltanschauliche Vielfalt in unserer Gesellschaft ist zu einer zentralen Herausforderung für alle Bildungsprozesse geworden. Im Religionsunterricht geht es jedoch nicht einfach um Interreligiosität im Allgemeinen, sondern zumeist um bestimmte Religionen wie Judentum und Islam. Die Bildungspläne zeigen dabei an, dass Judentum und Islam im Unterricht vermehrt Berücksichtigung finden sollen, auch schon zu Beginn der Sekundarstufe I und mitunter in gemeinsamen Unterrichtseinheiten zu beiden Religionen zugleich. Aber wie soll der Religionsunterricht dann konkret ausgestaltet werden? Der vorliegende Band nimmt diese Frage mit religionsdidaktischen Analysen sowie einer Untersuchung zu Bildungsplänen und Materialien für den Unterricht auf. Darüber hinaus wird eine empirische Untersuchung zu unterschiedlichen Möglichkeiten der Umsetzung der neuen Bildungsplanvorgaben vorgestellt. Die Befunde werden von Fachleuten aus der Aus- und Fortbildung für den Religionsunterricht aus der Perspektive der Praxis kommentiert. Der Band geht auf eine innovative Kooperation zwischen dem Lehrstuhl für Religionspädagogik an der Evangelisch-Theologischen Fakultät in Tübingen, den Staatlichen Seminaren für Didaktik und Lehrerbildung (Gymnasien) in Stuttgart und Tübingen sowie dem Pädagogisch-Theologischen Zentrum in Stuttgart-Birkach zurück.

    Abstract: Antisemitismus ist wieder sichtbar, teils offen, teils versteckt hinter "unbedachten " Äußerungen und Israelkritik. Doch wo beginnt der Antisemitismus, und wie neu ist, was wir heute erleben? Schon in der vorchristlichen Antike gab es Judenhass, Ghettos und Pogrome, doch erst die neutestamentlichen Schriften schufen mit ihrer Gegnerschaft zum Judentum die Voraussetzungen für Ritualmordlegenden und Verfolgungen im christlichen Mittelalter. Luther rief zur Auslöschung der "Teufelskinder" auf, die Aufklärer fanden das Judentum unvernünftig, Wissenschaftler begründeten den Judenhass rassistisch, und allzu viele waren bereit, sich an der "Endlösung der Judenfrage" zu beteiligen oder schauten lieber weg. Man könnte meinen, dass der Schock des Massenmordes heilsam war, doch Antizionismus und rechte Ideologien dringen seit Jahren mit antisemitischem Gepäck in die Mitte der Gesellschaft vor und bereiten den Boden für neue Gewalt. Peter Schäfers Buch ist Pflichtlektüre für alle, die besser verstehen wollen, warum der Antisemitismus so alt und zugleich so aktuell ist und was er für Juden in der Nachbarschaft, in Israel und überall auf der Welt bedeutet

    Abstract: Der Band präsentiert die Vielfalt der jüdischen Erfahrungen in der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit erstmals aus einer gesamteuropäischen, transnationalen Perspektive. Die elf Essays und zahlreichen Abbildungen zeigen, dass jüdische Überlebende und Flüchtlinge keine apathische Gruppe von Opfern waren, sondern ihr Schicksal nach dem Zivilisationsbruch aktiv in die Hand nahmen: Sie suchten überlebende Verwandte, organisierten ihre Ausreise, versuchten trotz katastrophaler Zustände soziale Netzwerke und jüdische Gemeinden wiederaufzubauen und bemühten sich um Gerechtigkeit und Wiedergutmachung sowie um die Dokumentation der nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen. Vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Flüchtlingskrise und dem Zunehmen nationalistischer Politik in Europa fokussiert der Band auf die unmittelbare Nachkriegszeit als Geburtsstunde der europäischen Idee und zeigt, wie sich eben diese Idee in den Biographien überlebender Jüdinnen und Juden abzeichnet.     Abstract: "Understanding the Spiritual Meaning of Jerusalem in Three Abrahamic Religions analyzes the historical, social and theological factors which have resulted in Jerusalem being considered a holy place in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It also surveys the transmission of the religious traditions related to Jerusalem. This volume centralizes both the biblical background of Jerusalem's pivotal role as holy place and its later development in religious writings; the biblical imagery has been adapted, rewritten and modified in Second Temple Jewish writings, the New Testament, patristic and Jewish literature, and Islamic traditions.     Abstract: Versöhnung wird aus jüdischer Perspektive genau dann notwendig, wenn der einzelne Mensch oder die Gruppe die gebotene Lebensordnung überschreitet. Dann gilt es Mittel und Wege an der Hand zu haben oder zu finden, um in diese zurückkehren zu können. Schon zur Zeit des Alten Israel wurde ein Tag im Jahr zu eben jenem Zweck formalisiert, der sogenannte „Tag der Versöhnung“ (Jom Kippur).Dieser Band untersucht im Kontext des jüdischen Versöhnungstages das Versöhnungsgeschehen in verschiedenen Relationen: Gott-Mensch, Mensch-Mensch und mit Blick auf die Gegenwart auch die Versöhnung des Menschen mit sich selbst.     Abstract: In The Jerusalem Temple in Diaspora, Jonathan Trotter shows how different diaspora Jews’ perspectives on the distant city of Jerusalem and the temple took shape while living in the diaspora, an experience which often is characterized by complicated senses of alienation from and belonging to an ancestral homeland and one’s current home.     Abstract: Linda Stone’s analysis of the anti-Jewish polemic present in three closely-linked twelfth-century Psalms glosses brings a new source to the study of medieval Christian-Jewish relations. She reveals how its presence, within the parva , media and magna glosses compiled respectively, by Anselm of Laon, Gilbert of Poitiers and Peter Lombard, illuminates the various societal challenges facing the twelfth-century Church. She shows that, rather than a twelfth-century phenomenon, using such anti-Jewish terminology in Christian Psalms exegesis was a long-standing reflection of Christianity’s ambivalence towards Judaism. Moreover, demonstrating how her analysis of anti-Jewish terminology unravelled the Psalm glosses’ textual relationships, she suggests that analysis of its presence in other glossed books of the Bible could offer a further resource for uncovering their complexities

Die Neuausgabe dieses Buches stellt Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede im Verständnis und in der Auslegung heraus und nimmt die intensive hermeneutische Diskussion der vergangenen 20 Jahre auf. Dazu gehören neue Erkenntnisse zu den Wechselbeziehungen von Judentum und Christentum in den ersten nachchristlichen Jahrhunderten ebenso wie die Fortschritte im christlich-jüdischen Dialog. Die im II. Vaticanum begründete Neuorientierung der Beziehung zum Judentum, die zu einem neuen Verständnis des Alten Testaments in der katholischen Theologie geführt hat, findet besondere Berücksichtigung.

    Abstract: The scientific debates on border crossings and cultural exchange between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have much increased over the last decades. Within this context, however, little attention has been given to the biblical Exodus, which not only plays a pivotal role in the Abrahamic religions, but also is a master narrative of a border crossing in itself. Sea and desert are spaces of liminality and transit in more than just a geographical sense. Their passage includes a transition to freedom and initiation into a new divine community, an encounter with God and an entry into the Age of law. The volume gathers twelve articles written by leading specialists in Jewish and Islamic Studies, Theology and Literature, Art and Film history, dedicated to the transitional aspects within the Exodus narrative. Bringing these studies together, the volume takes a double approach, one that is both comparative and intercultural. How do Jewish, Christian and Islamic texts and images read and retell the various border crossings in the Exodus story, and on what levels do they interrelate? By raising these questions the volume aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of contact points between the various traditions

Das 1613 gegründete Akademische Gymnasium schuf Professuren für Hebraistik oder - umfassender noch - für Orientalistik. Ein Name wie Hermann Samuel Reimarus ist mit diesen verbunden. Der eine oder andere dieser Lehrenden wurde darüber hinaus Hauptpastor. Der promovierte Alttestamentler und Hauptpastor i. R. von St. Nikolai Ferdinand Ahuis hat die Nachlässe von neun seiner Vorgänger aus vier Jahrhunderten hinsichtlich deren Haltung gegenüber dem Judentum untersucht. Im vorliegenden Werk stellt er diese Persönlichkeiten vor, deren theologische Auslegungen des Alten Testaments die christliche Sicht auf das Judentum mitgeprägt haben. Das Werk schließt mit einem virtuellen Dialog zwischen Hauptpastor und Bibelwissenschaftler Heinz Beckmann und Rabbiner und Bibelwissenschaftler Benno Jacob.

Jewish-Christian Grass Root Initiatives in Germany and Austria after 1945] From a doctrine of contempt to a doctrine of respect: After 1945 Christian churches had to confront their own anti-Jewish tradition and recognized their complicity for the shoah. The Jewish-Christian Dialogue is one significant result of that shift in mindset. In Germany and Austria, Jewish-Christian discussion initiatives based on the Hebrew Bible - a common document of faith shared by both Judaism and Christianity - were established in the first decades of the post-war period. This monography concentrates on four such dialogue initiatives, and the genesis and development of these dialogue-based educational formats and their reception of the Bible are analysed. The qualitative study grants dialogue-participants ample space for their perceptions und experiences.

    Abstract: This volumes traces the development of the term and category of the goy from the Bible to rabbinic literature. Adi Ophir and Ishay Rosen-Zvi show that the category of the goy was born much later than scholars assume; in fact not before the first century CE. They explain that the abstract concept of the gentile first appeared in Paul's Letters. However, it was only in rabbinic literature that this category became the centre of a stable and long standing structure that involved God, the Halakha, history, and salvation. The authors narrate this development through chronological analyses of the various biblical and post biblical texts (including the Dead Sea scrolls, the New Testament and early patristics, the Mishnah, and rabbinic Midrash) and synchronic analyses of several discursive structures

    Abstract: Historical Jesus research, Jewish or Christian, is marked by the search for origins and authenticity. The various Quests for the Historical Jesus contributed to a crisis of identity within Western Christianity. The result was a move “back to the Jewish roots!” For Jewish scholars it was a means to position Jewry within a dominantly Christian culture. As a consequence, Jews now feel more at ease to relate to Jesus as a Jew. For Walter Homolka the Christian challenge now is to formulate a new Christology: between a Christian exclusivism that denies the universality of God, and a pluralism that endangers the specificity of the Christian understanding of God and the uniqueness of religious traditions, including that of Christianity

    Abstract: In Ontological Aspects of Early Jewish Anthropology , Tyson L. Putthoff explores early Jewish beliefs about how the human self reacts ontologically in God’s presence. Combining contemporary theory with sound exegesis, Putthoff demonstrates that early Jews widely considered the self to be intrinsically malleable, such that it mimics the ontological state of the space it inhabits. In divine space, they believed, the self therefore shares in the ontological state of God himself. The book is critical for students and scholars alike. In putting forth a new framework for conceptualising early Jewish anthropology, it challenges scholars to rethink not only what early Jews believed about the self but how we approach the subject in the first place

    Abstract: Das Judentum ist als pädagogisch wirkender Kulturzusammenhang anzusehen, der global und interkulturell zu betrachten ist. In drei Etappen – von der Binnenperspektive zu transkulturellen Aneignungen – stellt der Band die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang von Bildung und Kultur neu. Im ersten Teil werden pädagogische Strukturen des kulturell institutionalisierten Judentums aus einer Binnenperspektive historisch begründet. Dabei geraten ihre Einflüsse von Moderne und Aufklärung ebenso in den Blick wie ihre Ursprünge in der Thorah. Der zweite Teil widmet sich verschiedenen Denkansätzen von Pädagogen jüdischer Herkunft und deren zentraler Rolle für die allgemeine, über eine spezifisch jüdische Kultur hinausweisende pädagogische Kultur.     Abstract: Jewish Prayer Texts from the Cairo Genizah , which sets a new tone for future studies, consists of a selection of transcribed and translated Genizah fragments that contain some of the earliest known texts of rabbinic prayers. Reif describes in detail the physical makeup of each manuscript and assesses the manner in which the scribe has tackled the matter of recording a preferred version. He then places the prayer texts included in the manuscript within the context of Jewish liturgical history, explaining the degree to which they were innovative and whether they established precedents to be followed in later prayer-books. He offers specialists and more general readers a fresh understanding of the historical, theological, linguistic, and social factors that may have motivated adjustments to their liturgical formulations

    Abstract: "In this book von Wahlde provides an exploration of three distinct cultural and religious backgrounds against which scholars have frequently proposed that the Gospel and Letters of John are to be read and understood. von Wahlde examines each of these three possibilities in turn, and shows how they may be regarded as plausible or implausible depending upon the evidence available. von Wahlde shows that there are features within the Gospel and/or Letters of John that do in fact suggest that they were influenced either by Gnosticism, Docetism or one of the variant forms of Judaism. However, in each case, while some of the evidence suggests a particular background, von Wahlde shows that it is equally evident that not all of the evidence can be seen to suggest the same background.     Abstract: This study examines the relationship between time and history in Second Temple literature. Numerous sources from that period express a belief that Jewish history began with an act of covenant formation and proceeded in linear fashion until the exile, an unprecedented event which severed the present from the past. The authors of Ben Sira, Jubilees , the Animal Apocalypse , and 4 Ezra responded to this theological challenge by claiming instead that Jewish history began at creation. Between creation and redemption, history unfolds as a series of static, repeating patterns that simultaneously account for the disappointments of the Second Temple period and confirm the eternal nature of the covenant. As iterations of timeless, cyclical patterns, the difficult post-exilic present and the glorious redemption of the future emerge as familiar, unremarkable, and inevitable historical developments

    Abstract: This work studies and compares systematically the text of Tertullian, an African Church Father of the third century CE, on idolatry with the rabbinic Mishnah Avodah Zarah , on the same subject, dating roughly from the same period. Similarities and differences between the Jewish and Christian approaches to idolatry are examined and accounted for. The research is inscribed in the wider framework of discussions on the “parting of the ways” between Jews and Christians. It also addresses related questions such as the role of the rabbis in second and third century Judaism in the Land of Israel and in the Diaspora; relations between Jews living in those places; interactions between Jews and pagans, Christians and pagans, Jews and Christians

    Abstract: Anhand der Geburt Jesu durch die Jungfrau Maria werden die in der Zeitenwende in Palästina vorhandenen Geisteshaltungen dargestellt und die in den letzten vorchristlichen Jahrhunderten aufgetretenen deuteronomistischen, weisheitlichen, apokalyptischen und hellenistischen Tendenzen berücksichtigt. Das Wirken von Jesus wird im Einklang mit seinem Judentum beschrieben und seine Kreuzigung durch die damals herrschende und später revidierte Ansicht über einen Messias erklärt, der gewaltsam zu seiner Herrschaft gelangen sollte. Die Loslösung der Jesusanhänger vom Judentum und der darauf folgende innerchristliche Konflikt begründet die antijudaistische Haltung maßgebender Kirchenväter. Diese sahen in der Beibehaltung jüdischer Bräuche der Judenchristen eine Gefahr für die Einheit des Christentums, das schon im zweiten Jahrhundert von den Christen dominiert wurde, die aus dem Heidentum stammten. Diese Einstellung gegen die judaisierenden Christen führte dann zu den antijudaistischen Aussagen christlicher Theologen
