    Abstract: Jahrzehntelang vertrat der Berliner jüdische Politiker und Diplomat Richard Lichtheim (1885-1963) die Interessen der Zionisten gegenüber den herrschenden Mächten der Zeit. Als Emissär der Zionistischen Organisation bemühte er sich während des Zweiten Weltkriegs vom schweizerischen Genf aus um die Rettung verfolgter Juden und verstand dabei als einer der ersten zeitgenössischen Beobachter, dass es sich bei den nationalsozialistischen Massenmorden an den europäischen Judenheiten um ein Verbrechen ungekannten Ausmaßes handelte: um ihre systematische und totale Vernichtung. Zuvor hatte Lichtheim während des Ersten Weltkriegs im osmanischen Konstantinopel gewirkt, wo es ihm durch geschicktes Verhandeln gelungen war, die Maßnahmen der repressiven jungtürkischen Minderheitenpolitik von der jüdischen Ansiedlung in Palästina abzuwenden. Die sich wandelnde politische Realität in Europa und Palästina brachte Lichtheim immer wieder dazu, auch die eigenen Nationalismusvorstellungen zu überdenken: Verfocht er in der Zwischenkriegszeit noch die Maximalforderungen der Zionisten-Revisionisten, wurde er vor dem Hintergrund des Holocaust schließlich ein Anhänger der linksliberalen Partei Aliya Hadasha. Andrea Kirchner entfaltet Lichtheims von Brüchen und Neuausrichtungen geprägte Biografie und zeigt, wie eng diese mit der komplexen Geschichte der jüdischen Nationalidee verknüpft ist, deren Verwirklichung immer wieder existenziellen Bedrohungen ausgesetzt war

    Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Julia Schneidawind rekonstruiert die Überlieferungsgeschichte deutsch-jüdischer Privatbibliotheken. Während eine nicht bezifferbare Masse an jüdischem Buchbesitz durch Raub, Verfolgung, und Krieg nach 1933 unwiederbringlich zerstört wurde, sind heute wenige Sammlungen über die Welt verstreut erhalten geblieben. So befindet sich die Sammlung Franz Rosenzweigs (1886-1929) heute in Tunesien; die Bibliothek Karl Wolfskehl (1869-1948) zwischen Jerusalem und Deutschland; die Sammlung Jakob Wassermann (1873-1934) in Nürnberg: die Bücher des Schriftstellers Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) zwischen Salzburg, London und Petrópolis in Brasilien sowie die Bibliothek Lion Feuchtwangers (1884-1958) in Los Angeles. Folgt man den Spuren der Sammlungen von ihrem Entstehungskontext an ihre heutigen Verwahrungsorte, eröffnen sich wichtige Erkenntnisse mit Blick auf die Frage nach Translokation materieller Kultur, aber auch dem Nachwirken deutsch-jüdischen Büchererbes heute in unterschiedlichen Räumen und Kontexten.Julia Schneidawind ist nicht auf eine einzelne Sammlung beschränkt, sondern kann durch die exemplarische Gegenüberstellung auch die geographische Überlieferungsbreite sowie die Diversität der Überlieferungswege der Privatbibliotheken aufzeigen. Auch die Diskrepanz mit Blick auf die Wahrnehmung, welche die Sammlungen an ihren unterschiedlichen Verwahrungsorten heute als deutsch-jüdisches Büchererbe erfahren, kommt in der synoptischen Darstellung zum Ausdruck. Zudem hat Schneidawind erstmals die Sammlungen Franz Rosenzweig in Tunis einer Bestandsaufnahme vor Ort unterzogen sowie die Überlieferungsgeschichte der Bibliothek anhand von Quellenmaterial rekonstruiert. Auch die Bibliothek Jakob Wassermanns wurde von der Autorin erstmals inhaltlich sowie mit Blick auf die Rezeptionsgeschichte untersucht.

    Abstract: Resolving Disputes challenges the consensus that the petitions to the leaders of "the πολίτευμα of the Jews in Herakleopolis" (P.Polit.Iud. 8.4-5) prove that while the Ptolemies granted Jews limited self-governance according to their ancestral traditions, the petitioners nonetheless relied almost exclusively on Ptolemaic Greek law to make their agreements and settle their arguments. Reading the appeals in their proper juridical context, this study shows how these Jewish petitioners in fact made sophisticated use of their ancestral norms, drawing from them principles that complemented and contradicted prevailing Greek law.     Abstract: Why do questions of purity play a minor role in the New Testament when the majority of the texts are of Jewish origin and character? To answer this question, the present study analyses the forming of identity as a central function to purity in ancient Jewish sources. Using the theory of social identity according to Henri Taijfel and John Turner, Milena Hasselmann examined the importance of purity texts in the New Testament and in other ancient Jewish sources for the construction of social identity. On a broad basis of sources and with the help of Hebrew-language literature, which is little received in the German and English-language scientific context, it becomes a meaningful picture that places the purity texts of the New Testament in its wider environment. In doing so, she shows that the New Testament's handling of questions of purity is to be seen in continuity rather than discontinuity with other ancient traditions. Warum nehmen Reinheitsfragen einen verhältnismäßig geringen Stellenwert im Neuen Testament ein, wenn die Texte mehrheitlich jüdischen Ursprungs und jüdischer Prägung sind? Dieser Frage geht die vorliegende Studie nach und setzt zu ihrer Beantwortung bei einer zentralen Funktion, die Reinheit in anderen antiken jüdischen Quellen zukommt, ein: Reinheitsbestimmungen sind identitätsstiftend. Mit der Theorie der Sozialen Identität nach Henri Tajfel und John Turner untersucht Milena Hasselmann, welche Bedeutung Reinheitstexte im Neuen Testament und in anderen antikjüdischen Quellen für die Konstruktion sozialer Identität haben. Auf einer breiten Quellenbasis und unter Hinzuziehung hebräischsprachiger Literatur, die im deutsch- und englischsprachigem Wissenschaftskontext wenig rezipiert wird, entwirft sie ein aussagekräftiges Bild, das die Reinheitstexte des Neuen Testament in dessen weitere Umwelt einordnet. Sie zeigt damit, dass der neutestamentliche Umgang mit Reinheitsfragen in Kontinuität zu anderen antiken Traditionen zu sehen ist

    Abstract: The translation of the Torah into Greek in Alexandria is an intriguing puzzle. Why was it undertaken at all? Was it a need of the Alexandrian Jews? Or did the Jewish wisdom intrigue the Egyptian ruler? Is the legend of the miraculous creation of the Septuagint a manifesto of cultural assimilation into the Hellenic culture? Does the Alexandrian Greek biblical exegesis, especially that of Philo, aim to break with the Hebrew tradition? According to this book, Philo, although not fluent in Hebrew himself, moves in the same shared Hebrew-Greek Torah universe that a closer look on the Septuagint legend reveals as well.     Abstract: "With 'A Glimpse into Medical Practice among Jews around 1500: Latin-German Pharmaceutical Glossaries in Hebrew Characters Extant in Ms Leiden, Universiteitsbibliotheek, Cod. Or. 4732/1 (SCAL 15), Fols. 1a-17b', Gerrit Bos and Klaus-Dietrich Fischer present an edition of two unique medieval lists of medico-botanical terms in Latin and German, written in Hebrew characters. Jewish physicians probably used these kinds of lists for the acquisition of pharmaceuticals they needed for the preparation of medicines. The edition with a total of 568 entries features transcriptions from the Hebrew, tables and indexes of the analysed terms in a regularized form, and a facsimile of the Leiden manuscript. Many of the German plant names featuing in the edition are not listed in the otherwise monumental reference work Wörterbuch der deutschen Pflanzennamen (Dictionary of German Plant Names) by the German botanist Heinrich Marzell. This testifies to the value of these glossaries for further research. It is also useful to see which Latin forms were in current use at the time of creation of the edition"--

In undertaking a comprehensive literary analysis, incorporating both the drama and the sayings together, Bledsoe shows that Ahiqar's didactic impulse is founded on a sense of uncertainty about life, offering advice for those in times of distress, much like the titular character himself. While Ahiqar shares many features with instructional literature like Proverbs, the ambiguous cosmic and social order imagined in the text resonate more strongly with the likes of Qoheleth or Job. Bledsoe also takes seriously the Elephantine context, suggesting that the social and political ethic evinced by the work would have resonated strongly with the Judean community in Achaemenid Egypt"

    Abstract: In The "God of Israel" in History and Tradition , Michael Stahl provides a foundational study of the formulaic title "god of Israel" ( 'elohe yisra'el ) in the Hebrew Bible. Employing critical theory on social power and identity, and through close literary and historical analysis, Dr. Stahl shows how the epithet "god of Israel" evolved to serve different social and political agendas throughout the course of ancient Israel and Judah's histories.     Abstract: "In Hispanojewish Archaeology, Alexander Bar-Magen Numhauser provides the first book-length archaeological exploration of the Jewish presence in late antique and early medieval Hispania. Using epigraphic, numismatic, architectural, and other archaeological remains, this volume describes the multiple cultural expressions of a vibrant Jewish community that emerged as part of the Mediterranean Diaspora, becoming part of the wider Hispanian society. Part of this review includes a detailed examination of the Ilici (Elche, Spain) basilical building, interpreted by previous scholars as both a church and a synagogue, using published and hitherto unpublished material of its decades-long excavation. In Gelübde im antiken Judentum und frühesten Christentum Daniel Schumann aims to trace the earliest discourses on vows, as they are recorded in ancient Jewish and early Christian sources from the time of the Second Temple. He also shows how Judaism and Christianity have participated in ancient forms of vow-making since late antiquity and how they also have developed these discourses further. By presenting these discourses on the basis of a broad range of sources, he reveals how in Jewish as well as in Christian perception, voices of esteem but also of reservation have been raised throughout the centuries. After all, vows are a cult-practical exercise in which well-being and disaster are in closer proximity than in most other acts of devotion

An outstanding representative of the Hebrew Jewish culture that then flourished in southern France, Gersonides wrote on mathematics, logic, astronomy, astrology, physical science, metaphysics and theology, and commented on almost the entire bible. His strong-minded attempt to integrate these different areas of study into a unitary system of thought was deeply rooted in the Aristotelian tradition and yet innovative in many respects, and thus elicited diverse and often impassionate reactions.     Abstract: Wie lässt sich Geschichte von ihrem möglichen Ende her begreifen? Der deutsch-jüdische Schriftsteller und Philosoph Günther Anders (1902–1992) ist für seine Deutungen der atomaren Endzeit bekannt. Anna Pollmann rekonstruiert aus Anders’ philosophischen und literarischen Schriften sein negatives Geschichtsdenken von der Genese in den 1930er Jahren bis hin zur Rezeption seiner Endzeitdiagnosen in den neuen sozialen Bewegungen. Das Buch erzählt von der Zerrüttung des Geschichtsbewusstseins im 20. Jahrhundert. Es macht sichtbar, wie sehr sich diese auch in der Form seines Werkes spiegelt. Die Zäsuren von Auschwitz und Hiroshima werden dabei in ihrer jeweils unterschiedlichen Bedeutung für die Grenzen historischen Denkens behandelt. Die Topografie von Andersʼ Emigration und Remigration nachzeichnend, führt die Studie an biografische Stationen wie Paris, Los Angeles, Berlin und Wien und in die ideengeschichtlichen Kontexte seines Geschichtsdenkens.

    Abstract: "In der jüdischen Apokalyptik lässt sich ein zwar seltenes, aber klares Motiv verfolgen: der Berg bzw. die Berge als zu bezwingende Widersacher. Ein solches Motiv lässt sich schon in den altorientalischen Quellen beobachten, denen zufolge es mit Gottheiten und Königen verbunden wurde. Das genannte Motiv wird in drei Werken – 1Hen (Bilderreden), 2Bar und 4Esra – im Rahmen der Beschreibung einer messianischen Gestalt mit der Intention verwendet, diese als außergewöhnlich darzustellen. Dabei sind alle drei Kontexte politisch konnotiert. In 2Bar und 1Hen repräsentieren die Berge eine politische Macht (in 2Bar zusammen mit dem Wald) bzw. ihre wirtschaftlich-militärische Grundlage. Der Vorläufer dieses Motivs ist im Orakelspruch Sach 4,7 zu finden, das ebenfalls politisch konnotiert ist. Die späteren Apokalypsen haben das zunächst einfach gestaltete Motiv um Elemente einer Theophanieschilderung bzw. um Elemente der divine warrior-Motivik angereichert." (Verlagsinformation)

The text remained in manuscript for about four centuries until the Galician scholar Isaiah Sonne (1887-1960) published a Hebrew annotated edition of the chronicle in the 1930s. This remarkable source offers an account of the events of the Papal States during Paul IV's pontificate (1555-59).     Abstract: Leser kennen Lyrik vor allem aus Anthologien. „Jüdische Lyrik“ wird dabei meist mit der Dichtung von Shoah-Überlebenden assoziiert. Jüdische Herausgeber sammelten jedoch schon viel früher jüdische Dichtung. Den Anspruch, für eine Gruppe zu sprechen und damit ihr Bild in der Öffentlichkeit mitzubestimmen, machte die Gattung Anthologie nicht nur für literarisch Ambitionierte attraktiv, sondern auch für unterschiedliche politische Gruppen. Unter Titeln wie „Junge Harfen“ (1903), „Lyrische Dichtung deutscher Juden“ (1920) oder „Jüdische Volkslieder“ (1935) versuchten Kulturzionisten, eigenständige jüdische Dichtungstraditionen zu etablieren. Doch auch alternative kulturpolitische Konzepte wählen die Anthologie als Mittel, wie etwa in Julius Moses‘ Anthologie „Hebräische Melodien“ (1920), die das Jüdische über das Thema und nicht die Herkunft bestimmt.

    Abstract: explores the various ways that ancient Jewish and Christian writers engaged with and interpreted the Hebrew Bible in antiquity, focusing on physical mechanics of rewriting and reuse, modes of allusion and quotation, texts and text forms, text collecting, and the development of interpretative traditions. Contributions examine the use of the Hebrew Bible and its early versions in a variety of ancient corpora, including the Septuagint, Dead Sea Scrolls, New Testament, and Rabbinic works, analysing the vast array of textual permutations that define ancient engagement with Jewish scripture. This volume argues that the processes of reading and cognition, influenced by the physical and intellectual contexts of interpretation, are central aspects of ancient biblical interpretation that are underappreciated in current scholarship

    Abstract: In Private Associations and Jewish Communities in the Hellenistic and Roman Cities, Benedikt Eckhardt brings together a group of experts to investigate a problem of historical categorization. Traditionally, scholars have either presupposed that Jewish groups were “Greco-Roman Associations” like others or have treated them in isolation from other groups. Attempts to begin a cross-disciplinary dialogue about the presuppositions and ultimate aims of the respective approaches have shown that much preliminary work on categories is necessary. This book explores the methodological dividing lines, based on the common-sense assumption that different questions require different solutions. Re-introducing historical differentiation into a field that has been dominated by abstractions, it provides the debate with a new foundation. Case studies highlight the problems and advantages of different approaches

    Abstract: Despite scholars’ ongoing historical and sociological investigations into the ancient family, the right and the status of the firstborn son have been rarely explored by NT scholars, and this topic has not attracted the careful attention that it deserves. This work offers a study of the meaning of the firstborn son in the New Testament paying specific attention to the concept of primogeniture in the Old Testament and Jewish literature. This study argues that primogeniture was a unique institution in Jewish society, and that the title of the firstborn son indicates his access to the promise of Israel, and is associated with the right of the inheritance (i.e., primogeniture) including the Land and the special status of Israel

    Abstract: In Arab-Jewish Literature: The Birth and Demise of the Arabic Short Story , Reuven Snir offers an account of the emergence of the art of the Arabic short story among the Arabized Jews during the 1920s, especially in Iraq and Egypt, its development in the next two decades, until the emigration to Israel after 1948, and the efforts to continue the literary writing in Israeli society, the shift to Hebrew, and its current demise. The stories discussed in the book reflect the various stages of the development of Arab-Jewish identity during the twentieth century and are studied in the relevant updated theoretical and literary contexts. An anthology of sixteen translated stories is also included as an appendix to the book

    Abstract: In Essen im antiken Judentum und Urchristentum untersucht Christina Eschner die Auseinandersetzungen zum jüdischen Gesetz innerhalb des Urchristentums vor dem Hintergrund vergleichbarer Diskurse im antiken Judentum. Ziel ist es, die urchristliche Praxis des Gesetzes in ihrem größeren Kontext darzustellen und ihr gegebenenfalls einen bestimmten Platz im facettenreichen Bild der zeitgenössischen jüdischen Strömungen zuzuweisen. Dabei finden Schriften aus Qumran, dem griechischsprachigen und dem rabbinischen Judentum Berücksichtigung. Der Fokus liegt auf Vorschriften zu verbotenen Speisen, zur Tischgemeinschaft und zur erlaubten Art und Weise der Nahrungsaufnahme. Auch pagane Traditionen werden einbezogen. Damit ist diese Studie besonders interdisziplinär ausgerichtet. Sie bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle zwischen Themenfeldern der neutestamentlichen Wissenschaft, der Altphilologie, der Alten Geschichte und der Judaistik. Sie kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass die urchristlichen Diskurse zum Essen nicht auf eine vollständige Abschaffung der entsprechenden jüdischen Gesetzesanordungen zielen. In Essen im antiken Judentum und Urchristentum Christina Eschner examines the Early Christian disputes about the Jewish law against the background of Ancient Jewish discourses on commands of the law, in order to situate the Early Christian practice of the law within its broader context. Jewish sources include the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish writings in Greek and early rabbinic texts. This study focusses on rules concerning prohibited food, table fellowship and the permissible way of food intake. Pagan traditions are also considered. Thus, the work has an interdisciplinary orientation, discussing issues at the junction of New Testament studies, Classics, Ancient History and Jewish studies. It concludes that Early Christian food discourses do not aim for the complete abolition of the law

    Abstract: In Antisemitic Conspiracy Theories in the Early Modern Iberian World: Narratives of Fear and Hatred , François Soyer offers the first detailed historical analysis of antisemitic conspiracy theories in Spain, Portugal and their overseas colonies between 1450 and 1750. These conspiracy theories accused Jews and conversos , the descendants of medieval Jewish converts to Christianity, of deadly plots and blamed them for a range of social, religious, military and economic problems. Ultimately, many Iberian antisemitic conspiracy theorists aimed to create a ‘moral panic’ about the converso presence in Iberian society, thereby justifying the legitimacy of ethnic discrimination within the Church and society. Moreover, they were also exploited by some churchmen seeking to impose an idealized sense of communal identity upon the lay faithful
