Abstract:
The enactment of the Racial Laws in 1938 was received by the Italian public either with indifference or approval, the latter due to the influence of years of fascist propaganda about a "Jewish-Masonic conspiracy against Italy", used by the fascist regime to conceal the true reasons for the Italian social and economic crisis and the growing conflicts with Great Britain and France. The Vatican, especially through its organ "La Civiltà Cattolica", endorsed fascist denunciations of "Jewish internationalism", which was associated with the danger of communism. The Racial Laws were considered essential to combat this danger. According to documents from the secret archives of the Vatican, made available to researchers in September 2006, the Vatican only protested against the laws which restricted marriages between Catholics and Jewish converts to Catholicism.
