Abstract:
Discusses Ehrenburg's early life, when he was growing up in Moscow. After 1905 he became involved in illegal activities of the Bolshevik organization. In 1908 Ehrenburg was arrested by the secret police for five months, and then allowed to go abroad. He chose to live in Paris, where he continued to work for the Bolshevik cause. In 1917 he returned to the Soviet Union, where he became a journalist and a favorite of Stalin. Discusses his dilemmas regarding his cultural identity as a Jew, a Bolshevik Russian, and a European (having lived in Paris for nine years) during the period up to 1928.
