Abstract:
The Relief Committee for the Victims of Pogroms was established in 1919, during a wave of anti-Jewish riots in Ukraine, by pro-White Army Jewish leaders and thus was affiliated with the Russian Red Cross which had been disbanded in Soviet-controlled areas. The Committee was a purely Jewish organization because the Russian Red Cross was unable to support it financially. The Committee acted effectively in the areas held by the White Army, while in the areas held by the Bolsheviks they were hindered in their activities by the newly established Soviet Red Cross which lacked both experience and means. The case of the Relief Committee, which acted under the aegis of Denikin's authorities, contradicts the stereotypical image of the Whites as an inadvertently anti-Jewish force.
