Abstract:
While in many vicinities of Western Belarus the Nazis murdered Jewish physicians, in some others they allowed them to live and function. The occupiers were driven by pragmatic considerations, mainly to prevent epidemics in their areas. A lack of "Aryan" doctors made them employ Jewish ones in many medical institutions. With ghettoization of the Jews in fall 1941, some medical institutions staffed by Jews were moved into ghettos. Their work was hampered by obstacles set by the Nazis, including a prohibition against dispensing medicine to Jews and confiscation of medical equipment. The eventual murder of Jewish physicians by the Nazis had serious consequences for the health services in Western Belarus.
