Abstract:
Discusses the pros and cons of the contention that Stalin had a plan to deport Soviet Jews, which was thwarted by his death in 1953. Focuses on the opposing views of Vladimir Naumov and Gennadii Kostyrchenko. The former argues that such a deportation was indeed being planned; the latter maintains that there is no clear proof of it. Naumov's arguments relate also to the antisemitism of Stalin himself and antisemitic attitudes among the Soviet people. The prevalence among Soviet Jews of fears of antisemitism gave credence to the possibility of a plan for deportation, especially in the aftershock of the Holocaust that encompassed part of Soviet Jewry. This article is based on a discussion which took place at a symposium at the Universität Eichstätt in 1998, in which Kostyrchencko, Naumov, and Madievskii took part.
