Abstract:
The text of the Oberammergau passion play was based until 1990 on Joseph Alois Daisenberger's text for the performances of 1860 and 1870. This text was criticized by both Jews and Christians for its extreme anti-Judaism, which went far beyond the Gospel story: the Jews were depicted as full of demonic hatred for Jesus and as solely guilty of his death. Since the 1970s, the Oberammergau community, which is responsible for the play, has engaged in dialogue with American Jewish organizations; these resulted in minor changes in 1980 and 1990 and a thorough revision by Christian Stückl and Otto Huber in 2000. Jews are now presented in a much more differentiated way, and Jesus' Jewish identity is emphasized. This is great progress, reflecting the progress in Christian-Jewish relations in Germany; but it does not go far enough because it still adheres to the Gospel story, which is itself anti-Jewish. Suggests that the play could permit itself more freedom on the basis of new theological and historical understandings of the New Testament.
