Abstract:
Delivered as the second annual Peter Richard Kenrick lecture at Kenrick Seminary, St. Louis, March 1996. Considerable progress has been made since Vatican II in ridding Christian consciousness of theological outlooks that have fed popular antisemitism. However, the antisemitic legacy has not disappeared from Christian faith expressions. The issues confronting the Church in this respect include proper understanding of the New Testament, the strong anti-Jewish theological traditions of many Church Fathers, covenantal theology, and elements in the liturgy. Surveys contemporary Christian scholarship and shows how it has overcome the deicide accusation, John's condemnation of "the Jews, " and Paul's contrast of the Jewish Law vs. the Gospels. Contends that the "adversus Judaeos" tradition is repudiated by the "Nostra Aetate" declaration. Speaks in favor of covenantal partnership. Calls for a more accurate selection of liturgical texts for Easter and other holy days in order to remove negative stereotyping from Christian worship.
