Abstract:
Claims that the war crimes trials in Austria, 80% of them held until 1948, quickly disappeared from public consciousness. Of 137,000 ex-Nazis who were investigated, charges were only brought against 28,000, of whom 14,000 were convicted, though in Vienna alone 60,000 Jewish apartments and numerous Jewish enterprises were forcibly expropriated. The ex-Nazis in Austria can be divided into two groups: those who were more guilty and those who were less guilty. The first group was not admitted into certain professions and did not have the right to vote for five years, while restrictions for the second group were insignificant. Altogether, 4,559 persons (33.5%) were sentenced to imprisonment for one year or less; 8,326 (61.2%) got up to five years; 650 (4.8%) got between 5-20 years; 29 (0.2%) were condemned to life imprisonment; and 43 (0.3%) were sentenced to death.
