Abstract:
The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries witnessed an impressive rise in the invention of new religious rituals in Jewish tradition, and charging traditional rituals with new meaning. It extended to all aspects of Jewish life, those regulated by Halakhah and even neutral domains from the Halakhic perspective, such as sleep, clothes, or good manners. Behind this ‘Ritual Turn’ stood the rise of early modern Kabbalah and the unprecedented shift from esoteric patterns to publicity and disseminating the Jewish mystical lore. These changes took place mostly in Jewish communities under the Ottoman Empire, and their main instigators were mystics of Sephardi origins. It added one front to the Jewish-Iberian cultural and political dominance over other Jewish local traditions. The ritual changes provide a trustworthy indication to important changes in Jewish religiosity, and the deep interaction between Jewish and non-Jewish religious changes in the early modern period, especially in the Ottoman context.
