Abstract: The purpose of this article is to provide a different reading of Hannah Arendt’s Eichmann in Jerusalem, that situates it as an expression of Arendt’s perception of the political sphere and of the individual’s mental and moral activity within totalitarian regimes, first developed in The Origins of Totalitarianism. Building upon contemporary interpretations that trace a common theoretical foundation underlying both books, and through concrete examples related to both Eichmann’s character and the behavior of the Jewish leadership in the Holocaust, this article establishes the theoretical link between Eichmann and Origins, underscoring their common message and the contemporary thinking problem, which constitutes one of the hallmarks of our present time. I further argue that such analysis provides a better understanding of the new legal category of the modern mass murderer, which Arendt identified. This theoretical type – that conflates victim and victimizer – is more dangerous than all the murderers of the past, since it commits crimes out of routine motives without being aware of their radical immorality.

Abstract: The Dutch novelist Harry Mulisch (1927-2010) attended the Eichmann trial as a reporter and subsequently published a series of articles on it in the conservative weekly "Elsevier"; later his essays were published in book form as "The Case 40/61". From the trial, Mulisch drew the opinion that Eichmann was neither a believer in Hitler and his doctrine nor a born criminal; rather, he was a "machine man" who obeyed orders blindly. As such, Eichmann was a "symbol of progress", and stood for the "man in the mirror" - potentially, an Eichmann lived in everyone of us, therefore we were not entitled to judge him. The main lesson we could learn from the Eichmann case, according to Mulisch, was the necessity to doubt absolutes and to rebel. Mulisch's conception of Eichmann has much in common with Arendt's. However, for Arendt, a philosopher, the Eichmann case serves as a condemnation of our civilization, which could produce Eichmann, while Mulisch in his "The Case 40/61" remains a novelist, for whom this case is a warning to contemporary man, who was a "machine" and a potential murderer. Argues that Mulisch's account was pioneering in Europeanization of the Holocaust. He transferred the guilt for the genocide from a few major criminals to everyone - the man in the mirror, who was complicit in the Holocaust to a greater or lesser extent.

Abstract: Contends that Arendt's "The Banality of Evil" was greatly misunderstood by contemporaries and by subsequent historiography. Arendt did not belittle the seriousness and monstrosity of what Eichmann had done, neither did she reduce him to being an obedient bureaucrat. Eichmann's main deficiency, according to Arendt, was his inability to think about and understand the meaning of what he did, especially crucial in the situation of Nazism's outright reversal of moral values. Dismisses the continuity between "The Origins of Totalitarianism" and "The Banality of Evil", which many critics have taken for granted; between writing these works, Arendt revised many of her views on evil and morals. Admits that Arendt was wrong when she diminished the significance of antisemitism in Eichmann's motivation. However, her analysis may be valid for other perpetrators of the Holocaust.

Abstract: The article examines the fate of hundreds of thousands of Jewish-owned books that had been looted by the Nazis. By the end of the Second World War, these books were scattered all across Europe, and within a very short time, they became the focus of bitter conflicts between three official elements – the Jewish organizations in the USA, Britain and Palestine, The American government, and the surviving Jewish communities in Europe. The Jewish possessions created a series of difficulties, diplomatic as well as economical and administrative. But as it soon turned out, first and foremost they created a political problem, deeply rooted in a battle field over the Jewish past, the victims’ memory and the link between the ruin of the European Jewry and the establishment of the State of Israel.

Abstract: The controversy surrounding Arendt's book "Eichmann in Jerusalem" since its publication in 1963 has become a text in itself, a destabilizing transatlantic text. It brought out the cultural divide between American intellectuals, with their universalizing and cosmopolitan perspectives, and those with an Eastern European background who were prone to an ethnically-grounded, nationalistic self-understanding. Thus, the controversy shattered a short-lived post-Holocaust Jewish unity. As a Jewish thinker with a north German, Reformist upbringing, Arendt did not conceive of the Holocaust as a sacred, mysterious event whose victims were part of a religious history of martyrdom, nor did she surrender to a cult of victimization. Her conception of the Holocaust as part of the collapse of values under totalitarianism is closer to the New Left discourse of the 1960s. Dismisses much of the criticism of "Eichmann in Jerusalem" as overstatements or as resulting from misreadings. Arendt did not justify Eichmann, but expanded the boundaries of guilt and responsibility by accusing the entire Nazi system. She did not lack love of the Jewish people, but rather refused to regard Jews as a nation and the Holocaust as an ethnic disaster. Her criticism was directed against many wartime West European Jewish leaders rather than only against "Ostjuden". Arendt remained alone in the controversy; even German Jewish refugees did not come to her defense.

Abstract: In the wake of the Holocaust, Arendt and Adorno developed different theories on antisemitism. Arendt's approach was a historicization of antisemitism, or interactionism - the view that antisemitism was an aspect of the relationship of Jews with the dominant society in the course of its modernization, while Adorno's was a mixed socio-psychoanalytical approach. Despite their differences, both Arendt and Adorno shared a common problem: both of them depended on elevation of the "conceptual Jew" to a central place in their paradigms. Their conceptual Jew was a cipher for the outsider, the queer, the nomad and, following Marx, was too closely identified with financial capitalism and the underside of modernity.

Abstract: Argues that Arendt’s "banality of evil" is not a concept that relativizes the Holocaust and exonerates perpetrators. Rather, it denounces the unlimited wickedness of ordinary men in a mass society.

Abstract: The unintended consequences of Hannah Arendt's depiction of Eichmann, in her book "Eichmann in Jerusalem" (1963), have been to reduce the moral consequence of evil actions. Her concept of the banality of evil has been taken to mean that evil generally speaking is a banal phenomenon. Examines Arendt's analysis of Eichmann in order to point out the groundlessness of her argument that evil can be treated as banal. States that banal evil is a fabrication invented by perpetrators, both to enable them to accept their misdeeds and to defend themselves against accusations. There is no need to invent an explanation for the evil of the Holocaust - the explanation is virulent antisemitism. There is no need to explain the seeming incomprehensibility of the existence of evil; one need only read the writings or the recorded statements of its perpetrators.

Abstract: Discusses correspondence between Hannah Arendt and Israeli historian Leni Yahil from May 1961 to April 1963, with one letter sent by Yahil to Arendt in 1971. Their relationship was rather cordial at first, but after Yahil read four of Arendt's five articles, which later lay the ground for her "Eichmann in Jerusalem", the women's friendship became irreparably damaged. Many subjects cropped up in the correspondence, and they basically involved three areas: "the banality of evil"; antisemitism, Germanness, and the Holocaust; Jews, the Jewish people, Judaism, and God. The controversy influenced Yahil's historical writing, which can be seen in her "The Holocaust: The Fate of European Jewry, 1932-1945". In contrast to Arendt's writing, Yahil's was characterized by a Jewish perspective; she stressed the complex development of the Nazi anti-Jewish policies from 1933-45 and dealt extensively with the policies and role of the Jewish Councils during the war, using eyewitness accounts. Pp. 40-65 contain translations of the correspondence between Arendt and Yahil, most of which was written in German; only two were in English.

Abstract: Arendt, reflecting on the Holocaust, inferred that evildoing was the result of an inability to think critically. She viewed perpetrators such as Eichmann as having refused to make moral judgments, and saw this refusal as rooted in an inability to think. Although Bauman followed Arendt in many respects, in particular in the call for critical thinking as a way out of evil, and was influenced greatly by her, he stressed morality. For him, resistance to evil is conditioned by following a pure ethics, which is not socially grounded and is completely independent from external legality. Arendt regarded the inability of thinking and totalitarianism itself as a rebellion against rationality, while Bauman saw it as an effect of modernity and cool rationality brought by it. Warns against following both Arendt's and Bauman's schemes in writing on the Holocaust, since the perpetrators' motivation and their relation to morality, the state, and its ideology might be more complicated.

Abstract: Discusses the "new" school of genocide studies that challenges the idea of the uniqueness of the Holocaust. Disputes the theory, particularly championed by Jürgen Zimmerer, of the Holocaust's non-European roots, specifically of its continuity with German mass murders of the Herero and Nama people in 1904-07 in Southwest Africa, where Windhoek was located. Refers to parallel elements in European imperialism and Nazism that are discussed in Hanna Arendt's "The Origins of Totalitarianism", but notes that Arendt did not posit a causal relationship between the phenomena. Points out shortcomings of Zimmerer's continuity theory, noting that Germany's colonial violence was preceeded by that of the U.S. in the Philippines, Spain in Cuba, and France in Algeria, all in the 19th century. Not only authoritarian regimes, but also democratic ones, have engaged in and justified mass violence. Nazism and the Holocaust represent not a continuation, but a break with European colonial tradition. Argues that Germany's experience during and after World War I was more influential than the pre-World War I period in affecting Nazi genocidal policy.

Abstract: States that Hannah Arendt did not consider fascist Italy as a totalitarian regime. This interpretation exercised a considerable influence on the study of fascism. Abstract: In the wake of the publication of "Eichmann in Jerusalem", Gershom Scholem sent a critical letter to Arendt, to which she responded. Scholem blamed her for accusing the whole of the Jewish people, rather than its leaders, of collaboration, which he regarded as tantamount to antisemitism and moral relativism; Arendt returned the accusation of antisemitism and immorality. Compares their perspectives on Jewish responsibility for the Holocaust and the possibility of judgment, and concludes that the arguments and perspectives of both Arendt and Scholem are problematic and reprehensible. Scholem's position that the Jews as victims cannot be judged leads to the stance that the Holocaust cannot be compared to any other crime. States that Scholem unconsciously uses the Nazi definition of Jews as a racial entity rather than a spiritual one.

Abstract: The main thesis of Arendt's "Eichmann in Jerusalem" is that Eichmann's inability to think led him blindly to pursue evil. In Arendt's view, critical self-reflection can protect a person from participating in evil deeds, particularly in a totalitarian regime. Argues that Arendt overestimated the power of thinking and its influence on individual conduct. She failed to explain cogently how Heidegger, no doubt a thinker, could support Hitler. Arendt was wrong in believing that critical thinking can be ascribed to everyone, and neglected the fact that non-thinking is compatible with virtuous acts, as was the case with many rescuers of Jews. She also underestimated internal and external factors that can undermine impartial thinking and mislead individuals about their moral well-being, as was the case with the Nazis. Concludes that Eichmann suffered from self-deception.

Abstract: Contends that there is a failure of synthesis between "universal" political theory and particularistic Jewish concerns in Arendt's work, which amounts to an intellectual and moral failure. There is a certain lack of compassion that runs through her entire theoretical work. It becomes fully apparent in her book on the Eichmann trial, where she practically ignores the Holocaust survivors' testimonies. Arendt's response to her critics was that she renounced the particularistic position; this explanation, or excuse, makes the moral failure of her book "Eichmann in Jerusalem" clearer and more explicit.

Abstract: Historical research has shown that the portrait of Eichmann and his SS accomplices as banal bureaucrats, portrayed by Hannah Arendt in her "Eichmann in Jerusalem", does not correspond to reality. Her crucial claim was that the banality of ordinary bureaucrats is the key to understanding the dynamism, scope, and scale of the Holocaust. Arendt's great contribution to Holocaust research was to point out that it was modern organized society that produced the Holocaust. However, the Nazi officials in the higher echelons were conscious and eager perpetrators. Argues that, rather than those Nazis, it was "grey-collar workers" who constituted the bureaucracy of the genocide. Institutions like Auschwitz could never have functioned without countless prisoners who were forced to serve the Nazis. Those who survived provided a heretofore neglected source of knowledge on the functioning of the Holocaust machinery. Paying attention to them can potentially bring Holocaust studies closer to the reality of evil, rather than its banality.

Abstract: Reflects upon how the views on the Holocaust of Adorno and Arendt were affected by their experiences (Adorno's return and Arendt's visits) in postwar West Germany. As Jews, neither felt welcome and both modified their views of the Holocaust as basically a universal problem of modernism to include specifically German aspects. Both perceived continuities between Nazi-era and postwar values, and felt that Germans denied their responsibility and, hence, continued to be affected by Nazism.

Abstract: Proposes a rereading of Arendt's "Eichmann in Jerusalem" as a book on the general collapse of political judgment in wartime Europe in a politically extreme situation (as Nazism was), rather than simply as a condemnation of Jewish politics during the Nazi era. Arendt postulates that it is impossible to construct firm patterns of thinking that would prevent us from doing evil under any circumstances, because thinking does not follow pre-existing rules or patterns. Her book is an apology for pride and for arrogant (i.e. independent) judgment.

Abstract: Argues that the war was a necessary prerequisite for carrying out the Holocaust. Before the war began, antisemitism and violence had occurred throughout Germany but it was not systematic and bureaucratic. The German populace reacted negatively to brutal violence perpetrated in the streets. But the war inured the German people to violence. War changed the social atmosphere in Germany, brought on mass psychosis, squashed popular dissent, and hardened people to senseless violence and the suffering of others. It provided the perpetrators with a complex system of psychological justification for their actions, and muted religious opposition. The Holocaust only makes sense in the context of the war; somehow German logic led to the conclusion that the Jews had actually caused both World Wars. Given that war is a catalyst for genocide, the first step in avoiding holocausts in the future is to avoid war itself.

Abstract: Despite its great success among readers, Goldhagen's "Hitler's Willing Executioners" is flawed both from the viewpoint of methodology and from that of historical conception. Contends that Goldhagen pretends to be a social scientist, yet his book does not follow the methods of social science. Comparisons, e.g. of German antisemitism to non-German, or to other German ethnic prejudices, are glaringly absent from his book. Goldhagen is the only Holocaust historian who prefers a single-factor explanation. He identifies Holocaust perpetrators as a single homogeneous collective subject - the Germans. He deliberately ignores the vast historiography of the Holocaust, especially the functionalist school. He ignores, also, the difference between the idealized actor model and the historical actors - the Germans of that epoch. He proposes a linear model of German history, in which its pre-Holocaust past was nothing but the development of the "genocidal antisemite." Goldhagen's book is a deliberate attempt to surpass traditional Holocaust history and historians, as well as traditional historical method, an attempt which has failed.

Abstract: Analyzes the tremendous intellectual and emotional impact, especially on American Jews, of Arendt's book, which was an attempt to explore the meaning of the deadly phenomenon of totalitarianism. Arendt situated the Jews at the storm center of events and attempted to grasp antisemitism at its deadliest level. Notes the book's inadequacies and weaknesses, including regarding the concept of totalitarianism. Stresses that Nazism and Auschwitz, and not the Gulag, drove Arendt's analysis. She does not, however, hint at the German "Sonderweg"; instead she universalizes totalitarianism, which she associates not with German or European culture, but with bourgeois mass society. Before the term "Holocaust" was common, the book formulated a (subsequently highly controversial) discourse of evil that is problematic, including in relation to Eurocentricism and other genocides. Concludes that, although the effort to find a rational vocabulary and explanation of unprecedented evil was in many ways unsuccessful, Arendt's attempt was valid and fascinating.

Abstract: Referring to the controversy that began in the mid-1960s around Arendt's book "Eichmann in Jerusalem, " notes that it was the first time after World War II that New York intellectuals addressed the Holocaust with intensity. The ferocity of the controversy may be credited to the fact that it arose at a crucial juncture in the history of American Jewry. In the early 1960s, American Jews wanted to defend their entry into the American melting pot by pointing to the sufferings only recently inflicted on their European brethren. They began to consider the Holocaust as a distinct event, separate from Nazi criminality in general. Arendt's book stirred them up because it did not sanctify the Holocaust, and because it questioned the virtues of victimhood. On the other hand, the book provided New York intellectuals, Jewish or not, with arguments for their conversion to "liberal anti-communism."

Abstract: In discussing the contrast between the views on the Holocaust of Daniel Goldhagen and Norman Finkelstein, concludes that neither is objective. Both are reductive, with their one-sided positions reflecting their own identities as affected by the ways they mourn (as Freud's psychoanalysis clarifies) those whom they view as the main victims (Jews or all of humanity). Criticizes both Goldhagen's thesis of the "unique German way" that led to the Holocaust and Finkelstein's thesis about the existence of a "Holocaust industry."

Abstract: Compares ideas about evil expressed by theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer in his "Creation and Fall" and by Hannah Arendt in her "Eichmann in Jerusalem". Pp. 386-396 discuss Arendt and the Eichmann trial. Arendt faulted the Jerusalem court for failing to understand the real criminality of Eichmann, which she related to the inability to understand or respond to the immensity of the evils of the Holocaust. She felt that it was a mistake to emphasize Eichmann's evil as something that only he, as a kind of demon, could have done. He was a bureaucrat whose crime was participating in a totalitarian regime where evil had become the norm. Arendt stressed that one should not despair, since evil does not have an independent existence; one should rather engage in participatory politics. States that the absolute responsibility of each person must be stressed, along with human freedom which, for Arendt, had a greater reality than evil.

Abstract: Goldhagen's "Hitler's Willing Executioners" attributes the Holocaust to the willing cooperation of hundreds of thousands of ordinary Germans, which Goldhagen traced to a specifically German form of eliminationist antisemitism. Claims that Goldhagen's rejection of "functionalism" led him to a "methodological individualism". Recommends supplementing Goldhagen's study of the behavior of the perpetrators with Michel Foucault's late (1988) insights about the way the "microphysics of power" leads people to internalize discipline. Although Foucault had in mind modern Western societies, his view that anticipation of surveillance leads to self-control clarifies Nazi totalitarianism. The Nazi system of behavior control affected peoples' ideas rather than the opposite, as Goldhagen claims.

Abstract: The significance of the Eichmann trial lies in the fact that it created a narrative of the Holocaust; victims were in the center of this narrative, and the State of Israel as the initiator of the trial came to represent them and to give them voice. The trial also created a legal narrative capable of approaching a crime of such an unprecedented nature. Afterward, the Holocaust became a collective and transmissible story and also a modern folktale of justice. Contends that Arendt's "Eichmann in Jerusalem" contributed no less than the prosecutor's opening speech and the trial proceedings to the creation of this narrative and to making the trial a powerful historical event. Israel created, in Nietzsche's terms, a "monumental history" of the Holocaust and the trial, whereas Arendt created a "critical history". Arendt disputes the official view of the trial on both juridical grounds (her philosophy of law is conservative) and on epistemological grounds (her philosophy of history is revolutionary). Her focus is not on the victims, but on the criminal and the nature of the crime. See the response by Marianna Torgovnick ["Critical Inquiry" 28, 3 (2002) 780-784] in which she reproaches Felman for an attempt to sacralize the Holocaust, for using terms like "myth" and "folktale", and for contrasting too sharply Arendt's attitude with that of the judges. Abstract: In "Hitler's Willing Executioners, " Goldhagen advances the "cognitive" thesis that Germans who participated in the Holocaust were motivated primarily by their false belief that Jews, by their very nature, were harmful to Germany and thus deserved to be eliminated. Paradoxically, this thesis mitigates the moral culpability of the perpetrators - those who believed that they killed for the well-being of their country cannot be accused to the same degree as opportunistic killers. Besides, Goldhagen's thesis fails to explain how "ordinary" perpetrators could sustain their false beliefs in the face of horrific contrary evidence. Sartre, in whose conception antisemitism is a passion rather than an idea, and who considers knowing and not-knowing to be a matter of individual free choice, provides a better explanation of how the perpetrators could sustain their belief and action and preserve moral culpability.

Abstract: The controversy surrounding Goldhagen's "Hitler's Willing Executioners" is used as a case study to examine the ideological structures at work when rhetoric, history, and collective memory intersect. Academic histories and collective memories are not antithetical concepts; together, they serve three rhetorical functions: they help create society's identities, maintain its traditions, and allow it to forget. Goldhagen's book became a bestseller in Germany because it invited readers to change their views of their own national identity, traditions, and collective memories. Goldhagen showed the limits of German "normalization, " and also showed Germans how to change their national identity. His arguments tapped into the reservoir of feelings and beliefs that existed in the collective memories of his readers. Many scholars criticized Goldhagen for his non-academic approach and style, as well as for his dangerous denigration of the Germans. Right as they are, Goldhagen's book possesses great rhetorical value.

Abstract: Contrasts Arendt's early postwar writings with "Eichmann in Jerusalem". In the former she stressed Nazi ideology more than Nazism's modern characteristics (use of technology, functional rationality, and bureaucracy) which she later focused on as the basis for the Holocaust. In both periods she stressed the lack of connection between Nazism and Western, especially German, philosophical and political traditions. Her letters to Karl Jaspers ca. 1946 offered a different, ontological perspective concerning what it meant to be human and the Nazi attempt "to eradicate the concept of the human being". This idea, which is present in "The Origins of Totalitarianism", is dropped in her book on Eichmann. There, the "banality of evil" implies that evil cannot be radical; questions about the nature of humanity are avoided. Concludes that the latter reflects Arendt's attempt to protect her philosophical and emotional stability. Avoidance of the question allows Arendt to salvage a belief in human goodness.

Abstract: Uses unpublished and recently (1995) published letters by Arendt to cast light on her controversial 1963 report on the Eichmann trial. Basically agrees with Arendt's critics (e.g. Norman Podhoretz), to the effect that "in seeking to do justice to her theory of totalitarianism Arendt does an injustice to the reality of antisemitism". also points out her dual standard for judging the Judenräte and the Nazi officials. Concludes that Arendt's attempt at objectivity was a way to distance herself from Jewish identity and the suffering of the Jewish people. Although she defined Eichmann's "banality" as an inability to think, she herself exhibited that failure in a different context - in refusing to engage in public debate about her book and avoiding an examination of her motivations in writing it.
