Abstract:
Clarifies Fackenheim's theology by presenting several corrections of common misconceptions. Notes that the philosopher was concerned with the Holocaust long before the Six Day War, that he was concerned not only with philosophers but also with ordinary Jews and their reactions during and after the Holocaust, and that he was interested in Christian, as well as Jewish, reactions. Stresses that Fackenheim realized that spiritual resistance had been practiced by Jews during the Holocaust and, thus, was possible for Jews afterward, rather than succumbing to nihilism or despair. Sees "To Mend the World" as Fackenheim's pivotal work in regard to the Holocaust.
