Abstract:
An early version of the introduction to "Modernity and the Holocaust" (Cambridge: Polity Press, 1989). Explores the impact of the Holocaust on the accepted sociological model of modern civilization, and criticizes those who view it as a phenomenon not representative of modern society. The Holocaust was an outcome of rational bureaucratic culture and reveals the destructive potential of the civilizing process. Contends that in modern society discipline often substitutes for moral responsibility and that the act is distanced from its consequences. This can account for the Nazis' success in enlisting the help of so many Germans in the perpetration of genocide and may explain the cooperation of the victims, the Jews, as well.
