Abstract:
Discusses Seghers' novella "Der Ausflug der toten Mädchen", written in exile during the war and published in New York in 1946, as a depiction of complicity, specifically of women, with Nazi values and policy. Notes how such fiction fills in the gap in our knowledge about daily life in Nazi Germany that is lacking due to the reticence of the participants or lack of sources. The novel traces collaborationist behavior to the values and attitudes of the previous generation. Antisemitism is one of the attitudes expressed by the women in the story.
