Abstract:
Argues that Michelangelo's sculpture of the horned Moses was influenced by the anti-Jewish associations of horns in St. Jerome's translation of the Bible into Latin. This antisemitic image, that links horns with the devil, has roots in early Christian literary polemics and extends through medieval and Renaissance art. An apparent visual influence on Michelangelo was the Malermi illustrated Bible. Another indication of Michelangelo's antisemitism is a yellow badge, which was revealed in a recent cleaning of the artist's work in the Sistine Chapel, on his depiction of the father-in-law of Moses' brother Aaron in the Sistine Chapel.
