Abstract:
States that Schneider (1900-1977) played a prominent role in the Third Reich as one of the worst antisemites amongst the German theologians. He was professor of New Testament at the Herder Institute in Riga from 1929-34, and professor in Königsberg from 1935. He was one of the first collaborators with the Eisenach Institut zur Erforschung und Beseitigung des jüdischen Einflusses auf das deutsche religiöse Leben. Examines Schneider's writings, showing that he used the antisemitism in antiquity to legitimize Nazi antisemitism, citing patristic quotations (e.g. about burning synagogues) to justify Nazi policy. Schneider interpreted Jesus, the "Galilean", as having been anti-Jewish, thus de-Judaizing both the New Testament and the history of Christianity. Although he was not admitted to the ranks of New Testament scholars after the war, he held an influential Church position and continued to express his earlier views. The comment by Robert P. Ericksen, "Christians in the Nazi Era: A Problematic Story" notes, inter alia, Schneider's opportunism.
