Abstract:
Discusses the legitimacy of Tabori's farcical representation of the young Hitler. Tabori's black humor is a way of dealing with despair; it is fundamentally serious. Simultaneously it is "world theater". But Tabori is treading a thin line. To make Hitler ridiculous may be permissible in the United States; in Austria and Germany it risks trivializing Hitler, enabling the audience to distance itself from him and thereby from its own responsibility for the Holocaust.
