Abstract:
Examining briefly the Gospels of Luke, Mark, and Matthew, concludes that the first followers of Jesus were not antisemitic. The earliest Gospel, that of Luke, is relatively free from anti-Jewish statements. Mark amplified the conflict between Jesus and his contemporaries; however, he presented Jesus as an abandoned Messiah and, for the most part, his text has no anti-Jewish penchants. The latest of the three Gospels, that of Matthew, possesses a number of anti-Jewish statements (e.g. the malediction on the Jews, the idea of Jesus' followers as the "true Israel"); this Gospel blames the whole Jewish nation for the death of Jesus. These ideas might not reflect Jesus' own thinking. Includes eleven facsimiles of anti-Jewish art works (especially drawings) from the 3rd century to the 20th.
