Abstract: This article examines how Jews and Judaism are envisioned in the Catholic imagination, through a critical reading of contemporary Catholic discourse on Judaism. It identifies three problematic areas. The first concerns the tendency of Catholic discourse to project a specifically Christian vision of salvation history onto the Jewish people, which reflects Christian rather than Jewish self-understanding. Second, this article analyzes patterns in language and imagery in Vatican documents about Judaism, alert to troubling allusions implicit in the texts. The third area concerns a hermeneutical obstacle to deep interreligious understanding, one which may be ultimately insurmountable: namely, the challenges of understanding the religious other according to its own self-understanding. This article reaches an ambivalent conclusion, conceding that the goal of recognizing the self-understanding of another religious tradition may ultimately be impossible.

Abstract: The doctrinal continuum between ancestral merits and rewards and punishments is well established in Second Temple Judaism and is discernible in John 8–9. Following Philo of Alexandria’s questioning of these doctrinal correlates, the Johannine chapters are subjected to a theological-rhetorical analysis focused on the transitional passage (9:1–5). The passage is here seen not as an introduction to a new theme but as corollary to the preceding chapter(s), having a duo-directional significance, linking a two-part refutation of invariably related doctrines: ancestral merits and rewards and punishments. The rejection or refutation of the latter affirms the rejection or refutation of the former, and vice versa. The Johannine chapters in question have a thematic and dialectical connection; they constitute a substantial part of the broader, interrelated polemic of the Fourth Gospel.

Abstract: The self-proclaimed atheist Jean-Paul Sartre portrayed the human being as a Dieu manqué, a »wannabe God.« His understanding of God, however, was limited to the philosophical notion of a self-grounded being, an ens causa sui. Many Zoharic texts, by contrast, depict seemingly interminable intra-divine, as well as human, struggles for unification that converge with Sartrean portrayals. Such texts, particularly those concerned with the divine relation to death, may be viewed as portraying the divine itself as a Dieu manqué. The juxtaposition of these Zoharic texts about human and divine souls with the Sartrean depiction of »human reality« provides unexpected reciprocal illumination – even in the face of Scholem's strictures against "existentialism"

Abstract: Deuteronomy 23:3, says: “No … Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord”. This verse is motivated by a discriminatory tendency embedded in the ontology of the Deuteronomist. Interestingly, Deuteronomy 23:3 was used by Ezra-Nehemiah to discriminate against the “Moabites” during the Second Temple. Such ontology is countered by the author of Ruth in the narrative of Ruth during the Second Temple. This demonstrates an ontological “war” within the Bible itself. The primary contestation lies in whether God is exclusive or inclusive. This development necessitates a hermeneutics of suspicion. In the course of history, the “theology” of Deuteronomy has been used to grossly violate the human dignity of many God-fearing African people and many other people of the South for colonial purposes. To exacerbate the situation, there were persistent attempts from some quarters to universalise such a discriminatory biblical perspective. This would feed into the centre–periphery arrangement, with the centre feeding the periphery with such hermeneutics. For this reason, African scholars are implored to be very vigilant against ardent pressures put on the biblical texts by ontological, epistemological, and contextual biases of interpretations. Accordingly, Andrew Mbuvi identifies African Biblical Hermeneutics perfectly when he says it seeks to undo “the very construct of the ‘centre-periphery’ binary by allowing the possibility of multiple centres”). Kenneth Ngwa, thus, rightly asserts that African Biblical Hermeneutics considers African epistemologies and conditions “to be invaluable and legitimate contexts and resources in biblical interpretation”), drinking from our own wells). In consequence, this paper intends to set a dialogue between Deuteronomy 23:3 and Ruth 4:18–22. This paper aims to examine the understanding of God behind these verses. This paper will then compare the two theologies with the African philosophical concept of God. Harnessing the African concept of Ubuntu, this paper will de-ideologise the two texts and thus will provide a recommendation concerning the two texts.

Abstract: In many churches nowadays, there has been a standardized approach to premarital counseling for couples involving social, pastoral, and psychological perspectives. In contrast, many rabbis and other Jewish officials still concentrate on legal aspects alone. The need for resolving important issues on the verge of wedlock is too often left to secular experts in law, psychology, or counseling. However, in recent years, this lack of formal training for marriage preparation has also been acknowledged by the Jewish clergy in order to incorporate it in the preparatory period before the bond is tied. This case study focuses on Jewish and Roman Catholic conceptions of marriage, past and present. We intend to do a comparative analysis of the prerequisites of religious marriage based on the assumption that both Judaism and the Roman Catholic Church have a distinct legal framework to assess marriage preparation.

Abstract: This paper will demonstrate that the best descriptor of Qohelet is divine hedonist, not absurdist, skeptic, pessimist, realist, nihilist or “Preacher of Joy.” This will be done by examining the relationship between Qohelet’s hebel-judgments and his carpe diem ethic and comparing Qohelet’s strategy with that of philosopher David Hume. Qohelet’s hebel-judgments serve to deconstruct the traditional formulation of the Tun-Ergehen-Zusammenhang, opening space for legitimating his preferred ethic: the carpe diem. In other words, Qohelet rhetorically paints a dark and dreary world in order to buttress his main ethic, the carpe diem, an ethic that is both hedonistic (using philosophical classification) in seeking pleasure and avoiding pain (reflected in his God-fearing motif), and divine in that this ethic must align with God’s mysterious decrees.

Abstract: "Nazis, Islamic Antisemitism, and the Middle East demonstrates the impact on the Arab world of Nazi ideology and propaganda in the 1930s and beyond. In 1937, with the brochure "Islam and Judaism", a new form of Jew hatred came into the world: Islamic antisemitism. The Nazis did everything they could to anchor this new message of hate through their Arabic-language radio propaganda. The book sheds light on this hitherto unknown chapter of Germany's past. It presents new archive findings that show how the image of Jews in Islam changed between 1937 and 1948 under the influence of this propaganda and other Nazi activities. This fresh look at Middle East history allows for a more precise assessment of the present: What exactly is "Islamic antisemitism"? How is it currently manifesting itself in Germany and France? What makes it particularly dangerous? Abstract: This article examines the broader context for Polish Jews' de-assimilation since the fall of communism, analyzes the complex process of individual discovery and communal recovery of Jewish identity, and discusses the multiple challenges de-assimilated Jews face in constructing a new Jewish identity. The study is based on fieldwork conducted between 2010 and 2019, and includes participant observation in Jewish organizations in Poland and during a Birthright trip to Israel with a group of young Polish Jews; interviews with Jewish communal leaders and Poles recovering a Jewish identity; and archival research documenting the institutional rebirth of Jewish life in Poland.

Abstract: This chapter introduces the theme of the volume and the contributions it seeks to make to the study of ancient travel. Such contributions are twofold. First, this volume is the first to include early Islamic travel within the comparative study of travel in antiquity. Abstract: This chapter argues that evolving food ritual and practices have played an important role in the development of Jewish culture, religion and identity from its biblical origins and rabbinic innovations to contemporary discussion about food ethics. Following a broadly chronological structure, the chapter discusses the ancient origins of Jewish dietary laws and examines how Jews throughout history have observed, adapted, challenged or critiqued them as authentic expressions of what being Jewish meant to them. The final section of the chapter discusses some economic aspects of kashrut, highlighting both the financial costs of a kosher diet and the economic implications, particularly in regard to the non-Jewish world. While Jewish dietary laws are often seen as a barrier between Jews and non-Jews, they have also offered economic opportunities across religious boundaries.

Abstract: The contrast between the Jewish ethical tradition and many other faith (and legal) traditions is worth focusing on. The Jewish tradition has a sexual ethic that is quite vibrant. It prohibits incest, adultery, rape – even marital rape, and recognizes that marriage has both a reproductive and a companionship justification. But yet, the Jewish tradition never fully embraced a deep and theological prohibition on polygamy and never fully endorsed any deep prohibition against non-marital sexuality. Of course, neither of these are still overtly present in the traditional Jewish community, but this chapter explores the parameters of models of sexuality in the Jewish tradition within the historical, religious, and theological models found in classical Talmudic Judaism.

Abstract: The chapter deals with three categories of material life: books, clothing and houses. All three took part in a long process of historical change. Paper books in the form of a codex generated a cultural and sociological revolution which enhanced literacy and created a reading society. Reading sharpened people’s ability to differentiate and observe, which resulted in a higher degree of sensitivity and self-awareness and generated a new code of dressing, according to which people ought to conceal the natural contour of their bodies as much as possible. Textiles became the major industry of these times with its tremendously variegated fabrics and colors. It was not only the human body which ought to be fully covered. The house too was mainly furnished by textiles: carpets, cushions and draperies with almost every piece of furniture, jars, stools, wall niches, mattresses and large trays, being “dressed” by some kind of textile. Textiles of all kinds replaced the wood furniture of antiquity and totally changed the concept of furnishing a house.

Abstract: Body image is studied in the context of culture and religion and it is explored in relationship to Jewish ritual and practice. Several similar studies have demonstrated this association for Jewish women, and also for other religions and cultures around the world. However, the scientific evidence pertaining to the possible mechanisms associated with such links is less clear. Still, when examining the possible effect of Jewish rituals and practices that help people to cope with body image concerns, faith and media exposure were found to have a potential mediating effect. With regard to modesty, although a highly relevant construct when studying both Jewish rituals and practices and body image, no evidence was found for such an association, though more research is clearly needed. These findings highlight the potential protective factor religion may play in the creation of body image satisfaction among Jewish women. Limitations of current research as well as implications and future research directions are discussed.

Abstract: This ethnographic chapter is about alternative (non-Orthodox) funeral rituals in Israel, from the post-secular and post-modern perspectives. I trace the major components of non-Orthodox funeral rites in Israel. I propose to view them as a novel type of post-secular, post-modern ritual, which combines components associated with the meta-categories of religion and secularism, rather than exchanging one set for another. The new alternative ritual in Israel entails hybridization of canonic religious prayers and appeals to God with components devoid of religious connotation and even conveying an unequivocally anti-religious message, such as a secular Kaddish, poems and songs of famous Israeli and world poets and singers. My second claim is that in the frame of alternative rituals, the canonic and static repertoire of the Jewish Orthodox funeral is replaced by the new, more flexible repertoire of literary creativity including pieces from modern Hebrew and world poetry. These transformations in funeral rituals reflect multiple changes occurring in Israeli society: the trends toward post-modernism, post-secularism, feminism and the changing status of women; and growing individualism reflecting the increased presence of Western individualist ideas in Israel. The mass immigration from the secular (former) Soviet Union, economic growth in the context of globalization, a neoliberal shift since the 2000s, an expansion of consumerism, and new demands for recognition by non-Orthodox groups, all enabled the emergence of dramatic changes in the area of alternative funerals.

Abstract: Since the resettlement of the Sephardim in the Ottoman Empire and Austro-Hungary following their expulsions from Iberia and into the modern era, Judezmo or Ladino, the distinctive Jewish language of the group often known today as the ‘Ottoman Sephardim’ or more broadly, ‘Ottoman Jewry,’ has played a key role in its speakers’ practice of Jewish ritual and religious life. The chapter offers a panoramic overview of that role. Basing itself on primary rabbinical and periodical sources in Judezmo and Hebrew as well as the extensive research literature on the language and culture of Judezmo speakers, the chapter analyzes the centrality of Judezmo among the Ottoman Sephardim as a language of sacred-text translation (e.g., Biblical, Mishnaic and Hebrew liturgical texts), paraliturgical literary creativity (e.g., original songs, rhyming couplets, hymns and dirges enriching celebrations of the calendar and life cycle), and language of holiday and life cycle event greetings, blessings, proverbs and sayings. Passages from Judezmo literature, in the original language and in translation, exemplify how the group’s rabbis and journalists related to Jewish religious ritual and custom, and commented on the decline of the traditional religious lifestyle under the influence of Western European liberal humanism from the beginning of the modern era. The chapter ends with some observations on the current Judezmo language and culture revival and suggests that this development may inspire a resuscitation of long-abandoned traditional religious ritual practices including some in which Judezmo played a central vital role.

Abstract: The intersections of Jewish and Christian ritual practice begin with shared roots in Second Temple Judaism and continue to today. However, their different theologies and sacred narratives and tendencies to define themselves in opposition to one another resulted in practices with minimal overlap. Nevertheless, as a minority community, Jews in Christian lands were greatly influenced by the aesthetics of Christian practices, and especially in recent centuries, deliberately imitated them. Israeli culture, though, has caused a resurgence of specifically Jewish expressions, and created a country where Jews are the majority culture. The radical post-Holocaust changes to Christian thinking about Jews have also led some Christians deliberately to imitate and integrate Jewish ritual practices.

Abstract: Jewish civilization is rich in religious ritual. It is therefore not surprising that Jews who wish to engage the community on a variety of social justice issues have used Jewish ritual as a platform to convey and disseminate their message. Materials for the Passover Seder are especially plentiful because of the popularity of the ritual and the centrality of justice concerns to the text. This chapter analyzes seminal social justice Haggadot published in the United States over the last one hundred years. In addition, it outlines the history of Jewish social activist thought, surveys the main arguments put forth to illustrate the Jewish imperative to pursue social justice, and looks at the critique of these claims and of social justice infused Jewish ritual.

Abstract: What does it mean to state that something is “barely legal”? Elaborating on the manifold meaning of “bare”, the text develops a literal understanding of the expression, dressing it down to its bare bones, its “Wortskelett”. In doing so, it demonstrates why (legal) hermeneutics itself might also be called barely legal, albeit in another, perhaps more common sense, as it does not merely follow an already well-established, pre-prescribed rule.

Abstract: This chapter covers the main story of Hebrew typography, while looking at the different stages of development, as a visual representation of the Jewish people, Zionism, and, finally, the State of Israel. Initially, the Hebrew type was meant for printing religious texts. The standard was set by great European printers, such as the Soncino family, Daniel Bomberg, and Guillaume Le Bé. These early typefaces established a spiritual Jewish textual image in print that was mostly produced by non-Jewish designers, who were not fully acquainted with the language. Secular and humanistic visuality came about with the creation of Frank-Rühl. Cantor and designer Rafael Frank based his design on tradition but managed to free it from its deep religious roots. A liberation of Hebrew typography followed, with two separate trends. Grotesque designs brought the visual representation of Hebrew up to speed with that of Latin languages. At the same time, meticulous designs revived old Hebrew lettering to be seen as apropos for the twentieth century. With the establishment of the State of Israel, type design became even more original and unique, highlighting a new and fresh look for the young state. Typefaces such as David and Hatzvi rely on the past but make a strong statement of rejuvenation and growth. These initial Israeli designs led to the development of a wide range of typographies and endless visual possibilities, especially with the introduction of computers in the 1980s. Today, leading Israeli designers are creating Hebrew versions for multilingual international typefaces, thereby establishing a new visual voice for Israel throughout the world.

Abstract: This chapter examines the ways in which Arab writers in the Levant and Egypt addressed the question of modern Antisemitism. It focuses on Arab writers who critiqued Antisemitism and called to distinguish between Zionism and Judaism. I argue that during the Ottoman and interwar periods, new understandings of representative politics generated an interest in how members of different religions, including Jews, come to identify with their imagined national community. In this period, Middle Eastern Jews shaped discussions about Judaism and Islam, as they lived in Muslim empires and Arab nation-states and played a part in their cultures and literatures. Modern interpretations of the role of religion in Arab societies, shaped against the backdrop of European colonialism and its negative assessment of the Muslim faith, likewise inspired new imaginings of the close relationship between Judaism and Islam. The rise of the Zionist movement and the subsequent conflict with the Palestinian national movement, however, raised new ideas about the relationship between Zionism and Antisemitism. Particularly after 1948, Arab writers sought to define how the future Palestinian state would treat its Jewish citizens and debated whom should be considered an indigenous Middle Eastern Jew. A common argument in these circles was that the Palestinians, who were forced to leave their country, making way to Jewish refugees and victims of European persecution, had actually paid the price for European Antisemitism. Paradoxically, then, because the Palestinians perceived themselves as victims of the Jewish Question, in their discussions, the Jewish Question was very much alive and unresolved. Subsequently, Arab writers attempted to establish that Judaism is a religion rather than a nationality and explored what it meant to be a modern Jewish subject, as they investigated the meanings of being a modern Palestinian subject and an exilic Arab intellectual.

Abstract: Flowers and traditions involving flowers tend to be conspicuously absent from early and late medieval Rabbinic literature, with one well-known but controversial exception. In contrast, literature and archaeological motifs beginning from the biblical period and reaching a climax in the late Second Temple period are replete with floral themes. The Madonna lily – lilium candidum – is especially celebrated as a symbol of ancient Israel, and particularly the Temple in Jerusalem, which may have been adorned with them in the late spring. In this essay, we analyze the Jewish culture of flowers in its Greco-Roman context and suggest possibilities to account for its ulti- mate disappearance – in particular, the translocation of Rabbinic scholarship to a Zoroastrian milieu, in which flowers played a central role in worship.

Abstract: Previous research on the Teachings of Silvanus has led to the generally accepted conclusion that the present form of the work is the result of a long textual development. Because of the text’s close relationship with the biblical and Hellenistic-Jewish Wisdom literature, it has been suggested that its earliest form was a Jewish sapiential writing, which over a long period of time was Christianised by the addition of New Testament material and Christian theological speculations. In the present study, the problem of the Teachings’ textual development is approached from a literary analysis of the text. It is argued that the work contains many instances of parallelismus membrorum, which in some cases are closely interwoven with biblical and Jewish sapiential texts and in other cases are abruptly broken up by Christian interpolations.

Abstract: This article describes and analyzes the methods of Footprints: Jewish Books Through Time and Place, a digital humanities contribution to book history. Footprints collects and aggregates information about the movement of copies of Hebrew books and books of Judaica in other languages printed in the early modern period (roughly corresponding to the hand-press era) and follows evidence of their movement into the twenty-first century. It stores this information in a relational database in which users can run specific queries and delivers the results in a number of visual representations for analysis and interpretation. Footprints undertakes two concurrent and more open-ended aims: (1) the on-going assemblage of a dataset about post-print mobility based on evidence other than the printed text (e.g. marginalia, catalog records, archival letters, other printed texts); and (2) the creation and iterative refining of a scholarly instrument to analyze the dataset through computational methods and modes of representation.

Abstract: This article concerns the Jewish community living in Bialystok, northeastern Poland's largest city. It used to be an important center of Jewish social and cultural life, with over forty thousand Jewish residents before World War II. As a consequence of the Holocaust, the population of the community decreased to a maximum of 1,500. The research, based mainly on statistical data from Jewish social institutions, reveals further changes, mainly caused by migratory movements and the processes of acculturation and assimilation, which led to the total disappearance of that community within less than thirty years. Another subject of the analysis is the demographic and professional structure of this population in the postwar years. The research shows that the unique demographic structure was the result of varied chances of survival during the war: higher in the case of men and people of working age. The professional activity of Bialystok Jews was characterized by a low rate of regular employment, especially in industry, and a relatively high rate of work in cooperatives and craft workshops. This professional structure differed significantly from the situation before the war and also from that typical in Polish society in general during this period, but with the passage of time, the uniqueness of the Jewish community decreased.

Abstract: The "Society of Learners" is an accepted research model that explains communal, religious, and sociological features among Lithuanian and Mizrahi communities in Israel. This model has become increasingly challenging for many ultra-Orthodox men and women. In this article we discuss reactions to the society of learners model as a motive for the establishment of the ultra-Orthodox feminist movement that was created in anticipation of the 2013 Knesset elections, and examine its role in the establishment of the movement. Through semi-structured, in-depth interviews we asked fifteen ultra-Orthodox women whether the model was a factor in the formation of ultra-Orthodox feminism and found three central motifs in their responses: a woman's place in the life of the individual and the repercussions of this model on the life of ultra-Orthodox women; the value of Torah study and resistance to the society of learners as an exclusive model; and lastly, the economic consequences of the model. This study adds a new facet to the theory of the society of learners and supports other studies of women from minority groups as agents of preservation and change. Hence, it contributes a better understanding of the ultra-Orthodox feminist movement in Israel which developed less than a decade ago.

Abstract: The recent war in Europe, the Ukraine–Russia war, has had a huge impact in the lives of millions of people in the European continent—in the lives of both those who have fled the conflict and of those who have welcomed them with open arms. In this paper, we conduct a philosophical investigation into the issue of hospitality to others, to strangers, to foreigners trying to understand this phenomenon taking place in Europe, and elsewhere. First, we investigate the Jewish Mitzvah of Hospitality by referring to two passages in the Torah that exemplify hospitality and one that instantiates its opposite, hostility to the other, to strangers and foreigners. Following from this, we provide a discussion on Jewish ethics and its deontological and virtue ethics connections. In the last section, we engage with a discussion connecting the field of education and the matter of hospitality.

Abstract: The storms threatening ancient sea-travelers were traditionally supposed to be a sign of divine displeasure. The marine voyage with its tempests, famously featuring in the Jonah story, also became a well-known topos in Greco-Roman storytelling. This essay investigates how some Jewish and Christian narrators reworked that topos in light of their particular religious agendas. Their tales thus turn out to be hybrid creatures composed of both biblical and mythological patterns of narration. Several such mythological patterns can be discerned in late antique sea travelogues, including divine intervention calming a stormy tempest; wondrous birds coming to sailors’ rescue; and treasure hidden in the depth of the sea, guarded by a monstrous creature. Our study focuses on the final motif, with the texts under discussion mostly originating in the Syro-Mesopotamian Aramaic-speaking cultural sphere-Jewish rabbinic and Syriac Christian milieus. For all our narrators, the sea maintained its perilous appeal and the voyages provided a meaningful liminal experience that challenged their religious outlook. We outline a variety of strategies in dealing with the tension inherent in the sea adventure, some of them tailored to temper the mythic tenor of the background tradition.

Abstract: This article critically examines Krajewski’s (in this issue of Contemp Jewry) argument about the assimilation and subsequent de-assimilation of the Jewish population in Poland. While Krajewski asserts that Polish Jews underwent a process of assimilation followed by a revival of their cultural and religious practices, the authors argue that the term “de-assimilation” is not applicable in this context. They propose that post-war Polish Jews consciously chose to embrace a secular identity rather than a religious one, keeping their Jewish life private. This secular identity, characterized by interests in secular Jewish culture, learning, and social justice, as well as maintaining specific distinctive habits, remained dominant even after 1989. The authors also compare this process to the experiences of Spanish and Portuguese conversos, who returned to Judaism but retained syncretic identities. They emphasize the importance of understanding the complex nature of Jewish identity and involvement, highlighting the significance of secular and cultural practices among Polish Jews.

Abstract: After the 1968 emigration, very few Jews remained in Poland, and even more miniscule was the number of “Jewish Jews.” Since then the number has grown somewhat, and much of it is due to the process of de-assimilation; i.e., some people with Jewish ancestors raised in completely Polonized families began to recover, reclaim, and readapt their Jewish background. An analysis of this phenomenon is offered with a series of putative reasons for its occurrence. The individuals constituting the “products” of de-assimilation are the majority of Polish Jews today and form much of the current leadership. While individuals everywhere can strengthen their ties to the Jewish people and can experience teshuvah or another kind of “Judaization,” the process of de-assimilation does not seem to be reducible to those moves. It begins with no Jewish identity, and is highly dependent on the attitudes and cultural trends in the majority society. It does not remove the de-assimilationists from the majority culture. The phenomenon is general and deserves to be studied as a sociological mechanism working in other cases of assimilation to a majority culture. In the Jewish case, it is especially dramatic. Probably the first example can be found in the evolution of the Marrano communities settled in Holland. The presence of de-assimilation seems to differentiate some European, first of all East European, communities from the globally dominant American and Israeli ones. Probably this rather new concept is needed to describe a significant part of the world of the Jews of twenty-first century Europe.

Abstract: By early 2020, COVID-19 was spreading around the world. In many countries, efforts to stop the proliferation included quarantining sufferers and those around them, and in some cases even locking down entire civilian populations. A pandemic calls for personal responsibility with regard to obeying authorities’ instructions concerning social distancing, the wearing of masks, and self-isolation after exposure to a corona patient. The idea of shaming people who are violating the regulations is spreading, but there have been only a few attempts to find the proper balance between respecting human dignity and concern for public health. This article surveys the Jewish ethical principles that seek to balance concern for public health with the shame of the individual and suggests that sometimes there will be both ethical and religious justifications for shaming, at other times, it will be forbidden, and on occasion, it will be permissible within certain limits.

Abstract: This essay examines examples of the Oral Torah as a concrete, material phenomenon in late ancient rabbinic sources. The oral nature of oral Torah, both as an ideology and as a description of rabbinic textual practices, can elide some of the more evocative discussions of the nature of oral Torah. Previous discussions, such as Wollenberg (2019), have shown that the nature of the written Torah was often understood as unstable, changing, and mutable. This essay explores the other side of that equation, exploring discussions of oral Text as concrete, enduring, and unchanging. Two main examples are studied: the first from a passage in the Palestinian Talmud, and the second in a passage from the Babylonian Talmud. The Palestinian Talmud draws a dense network of connections between Torah scrolls, oral teachings, rabbinic sages, and the imagery of death and memorialization. The Babylonian Talmud similarly extends the value of rabbinic oral teaching into the World to Come, showing that while the associations between teaching, death, and eternal life manifest differently, they are still present in different rabbinic contexts. Taken together, these inscriptions of a concrete and material Oral Torah are fully realized in the body of the rabbinic sage. Other scholars have also shown that rabbinic sages become an embodiment of Torah: this essay examines the nature of rabbinic Torah, as discussed in rabbinic literature, to understand how that embodiment comes about.

Abstract: Heinrich Graetz (1817–1891), the famous historian and biblical exegete, penned his commentary to the Song of Songs in 1871 to counter rising antisemitism fueled by racialized fantasies of Jewish gender and sexuality. Graetz contested antisemitic tropes of Jewish masculinity and femininity by reconfiguring the Song of Songs, this most blatantly erotic book of scripture, as a testament to and celebration of Jewish chastity. Against the lascivious femme fatal, Graetz introduced the tender Sulamit, whose paradigmatic chastity renders romantic ardor into asexual, sisterly affection. In contrast to the effeminate Jew, Graetz introduced the Friend, a brawny adventurer whose masculine attempt at chastity only reveals his sexual potency. Graetz leverages the co-constitutive relationships among gender, class, and race to bestow on these figures not only the bourgeois virtues connoted by their chastity, but also associations of whiteness and middle-class belonging. Graetz’s exegetical construction of new models of Jewish femininity and masculinity was no mere theoretical exercise, but a response to matters of life and death as the rise of sexually transmitted diseases coalesced into a public health crisis. With the specter of syphilis in the background, Graetz’s commentary to the Song of Songs proffered German Jews—and German Christians—a Semitic path to redemption from the immorality crippling fin-de-siècle Germany.

Abstract: Notger Slenczka’s 2013 call to decanonize the Old Testament provoked a public outcry in Germany, one that extended far beyond the ivory tower but received little attention in the English-speaking world. This article explains the controversy, which included public accusations of antisemitism; analyzes the origins of Slenczka’s view; and looks at potential Jewish responses to such a claim. The Old Testament, Slenczka argues, is a revelation to the Jews but not to Christians. In modern times, he believes, Christians can no longer claim that they are spoken to in the Old Testament, and the text should therefore be relegated to the status of apocrypha, enlightening but not part of the Protestant canon. Slenczka was seen as breaching decades-long attempts to develop Jewish-Christian dialogue in the aftermath of the Holocaust, which explains the harsh reactions to his work. I show how the controversy exposes deeper anxieties about the specter of Marcionism and a Christianity without the Old Testament. After explaining Slenczka’s argument, I show its debt to Adolf von Harnack, the person more responsible than any other for interest in Marcion in the interwar period. The article then offers three possible Jewish replies to Slenczka’s argument, relying, among others, on earlier Jewish responses to debates about Marcion: rejection, disengagement, and engagement. Although rejection is the most common, engagement is another possibility, which tentatively offers a new path for Jewish-Christian exchange in the twenty-first century.

Abstract: This paper argues that the rhetoric of forgetting was central to the early rabbinic movement's self-conception. Earlier interpretations of the saying that »the Torah is bound to be forgotten« were guided by the »retreat from history« hypothesis. On this account, the rabbis promoted their efforts at preservation and consolidation of the Torah as a timely solution to the vicissitudes of real events. Balberg, however, stresses the specific connection between this motif of forgetting the Torah, and Ezra the scribe, a prior promulgator of the notion of a »second Torah.« Rabbis styled themselves as Ezras, expanding and blurring this older idea so as to encompass a wider range of forgettings. In the process, they redefined what it means not to forget the Torah. Not only the giving and interpretation of the Torah, but also its perpetual renewal, became a recurring pattern of rabbinic thought. Thus one cannot distinguish historical from ahistorical or traditional rabbinic uses of the past; all are textually mediated.

Abstract: Water is a master metaphor in literature, appearing in many writings around the world. In some cases, water is stormy, vicious and destructive; in others, water is calm, steady and enriching; in yet other cases, water is reachable, manageable, and replenishable. In this essay, I will examine the different meanings of ‘a well of water’ by comparing Jacob’s well in the Gospel of St John and the Jing (‘The Well’, #48) hexagram in the I Ching or Book of Changes. In this comparison, my goal is to show that while ‘a well of water’ has a universal appeal as a symbol of finding ‘a living spring’ in one’s spirit, it has different connotations and implications in different cultural systems. In these two renditions of ‘a well of water’, we find authors providing different answers to the fundamental questions of human existence and the meaning of life-long learning.

Abstract: This article offers a social and political reading of the ancient rabbinic law of finders. What are the effects of the law of finders on the ideals of friendship and solidarity? Early rabbinic explicit interpretations of the biblical law point to returning lost property as an ethical obligation empowering friendship and reducing enmity in society. However, a major change in this approach begins to take place in the tannaitic texts where this simple obligation is replaced with questions arising from practical impediments to returning lost property. These texts also allow for certain cases in which the finder can become the new owner of the found object. The heart of the problem lies in the view that ownership dissolves when the loser is presumed to despair of retrieving his lost item. It is astonishing to discern later Talmudic developments of the concept of despair (ye’ush ‏יאוש‎) leading to conclusions clearly contrasting with the social ideal of friendship ascribed to the law of finders by early rabbinic exegesis. In extreme cases—and contrary to the view of Roman jurists—some rabbis preferred the interest of the finder over that of the loser even when the lost item could be restored. Such rulings, this article argues, produce enmity instead of friendship, and they are criticized from a point of view internal to the rabbinic tradition itself. This critique, taken from a sociopolitical perspective, must be available for readers of rabbinic law.
