Abstract:
Jewish civilization is rich in religious ritual. It is therefore not surprising that Jews who wish to engage the community on a variety of social justice issues have used Jewish ritual as a platform to convey and disseminate their message. Materials for the Passover Seder are especially plentiful because of the popularity of the ritual and the centrality of justice concerns to the text. This chapter analyzes seminal social justice Haggadot published in the United States over the last one hundred years. In addition, it outlines the history of Jewish social activist thought, surveys the main arguments put forth to illustrate the Jewish imperative to pursue social justice, and looks at the critique of these claims and of social justice infused Jewish ritual.
